Apple MacBook Pro are one of the best laptops from Apple.
Seems good specifications, but if you can get 17" it will better, or get 4GB RAM from beginning it will be much better, and be sure the monitor is matte [to me it is better for editing], and i know there is wide or High Resolution Screen, if you can afford it it will be much better but not so necessary.
check if your Hard Drive is 7200rpm, i can't tell much why to get that but seems many prefer to get that speed of HD.
Can't you get 2.4GHz if available?
Your post of that MBP is great no doubt but laptops upgrading later sometimes not as easy as desktops so try to get something update or latest or highest performance in everything or many things, maybe your budget is not so to get but if you can increase a bit then it is better for you for long term trust me, and laptops are going slower after a while of the usage and filling with softwares and photos and so, but i hope you will be happy with what you will choose, still MBP whatever it is the best of laptops in the world [I am happy with my MBP very much].

Good luck

Unless you have a compelling need to go with the MBP, you should consider the MacBook. It will save you a lot of money and is nearly equivalent to the MBP in terms of photo work. The integrated X3100 gpu (128 mb system RAM as vRAM) on the MacBook is excellent for 2D image tasking and will drive up to a 24" external display (1920x1200) in either mirroring or dual-display modes (as well as a projector or HDTV). Personally, I also like the polycarbonate shell of the MacBook vs. the aluminum of the MacBook Pro (we have both). What you get with the MBP is:

  • A slightly faster cpu
  • A dedicated dual-link graphics card that can drive a 30" external display
  • A lighted keyboard that autodims
  • An LED backlit panel that autodims
  • A card bus slot (34)
  • Firewire 800 (vs 400 only for the MB)
  • A larger display (15" vs 13")
  • An option for matte display (glossy only for MB)

For the savings of US$900 you could buy a lot of nice accessories, such as a wireless keyboard and mouse (Bluetooth), an external 24" display, max out the RAM to 4 gigs, and get a 500 gig external hard drive for storage of photos (which will add up in a hurry).

What ever you do, DO NOT buy extra RAM from Apple; their prices are completely out of line.

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

I just picked up a MBP 2.4 and saved $500 by getting refurbished - have a look at the Apple store for refurbished models, they come with the same warrentee.

Get the least amount of RAM from Apple and upgrade to 4 gigs for $100 from someone else.

IMO, the macbook is not good for photo editing. First, the screen is glossy which makes it difficult to assess color. Second, the 13" screen is too small.

I have the 15"Macbook Pro. I am very happy with it however the screen is still a bit small if that is all you will have. I also have a 23" Apple Cinema Display which make a huge difference.

Sure, if money is no object. But value-wise, for photo work the MB will do a great job. It'll be almost as fast as a MBP (except for the very few gpu-intensive processes introduced in CS3, or with Aperture) since its cpu is only slightly slower than that of the MBP. With the price difference between MB/MBP, the OP could buy a nice 24" S-IPS or S-PVA DVI display, a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, a 4 gigs of RAM, a display calibrator and a few beers for me.

Don't forget that OP asking about what he is looking for, i think he would stick with MBP 15", as long it is MBP he will be fine, just i told him if he can upgrade few things like RAM, HD and so then he will be all the way, later he can add more as additional monitor for better PP or whatever that can help him, so focus on the OP post.

I think it's a great computer. I have one because I do more with it than photography. If I only did photography, I'd spend the money on a MB with a 24" S-IPS or S-PVA display, bluetooth keyboard and mouse, 4 gigs of RAM, a Spyder2, a 500 gig external hard drive and a case of 90 Shilling beer (external link).

That's what I think. ;)

This is an interesting thread:

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=437149

I'm interested in buying a new MBP, but there are rumours of an upgrade soon. They are well overdue a good upgrade, not a minor speed bump one.

check the link- see my last post on page 4.

Yes, the scuttlebutt is dual- and quad-core Penryns on revised Santa Rosa chipsets. Since both the MB and MBP use Santa Rosa, you might see the MB get dual-core and the MBP get quad-core. Intel should be shipping the first half of this year.
