I'm considering upgrading my 300D in the near future, and I'm considering the 40D. I haven't been around in a while and was wondering the overall consensus on the 40D.

Thanks in advance

If you have a decent budget get it, or wait till it release a better one i.e 50D or 60D.

You could end up waiting on the better model for the rest of your life. At some point, ya gotta just go for it.

I love the 40D, great camera and everything I want. You could wait for the next bigger and better but at what point will enough be enough. If it will work for you now then chances in 1-3 years it still will. Go ahead and spoil yourself

From 300D the 40D is a considerable upgrade.
If you really hit the limitations of the 300D, go for it.

If you still work fine with 300D, just wait till it falls apart and buy the newest xxD available at that moment.
In the mean time spend your money on some fine lenses.

There is always going to be newer models.. get the 40D now, there won't be a upgrade anytime soon since it just recently came out. I say go for it.

Cameras are a lot like tv's (or all consumer electronics for that matter). If you keep waiting you will never get anything. Undoubtedly one or two things will happen when you make a purchase regardless of timing. They will drop the price 2 weeks later or a new model will be released soon after purchase.

It's a worthy upgrade.

Go to the camera store (or local Best Buy, or whatever) and play with one for a bit. See how it feels, how it handles. Bring a CF card and take a few shots with it. Get a feel for the camera.

If you find you like it enough, buy it. It's so much camera that you almost certainly won't want anything more for quite some time, unless you're the sort of person who really wants to keep up with the latest and greatest (and you don't seem to be such a person, otherwise you wouldn't still have a 300D).

The 40D is that good, in my opinion, and about the only thing I can think of that might otherwise tempt you would be a full-frame body like the 5D. And even that isn't really so much better than the 40D as to be a night and day difference (see this thread for evidence, by way of a 20D), at least when it comes to noise.
