thinking of purchasing a macro lens, but my question is:
is Macro great in low light situations?
i hope someone in here can help me.

not to speak of! with Macro you are always fighting between DOF and getting enough light. so I would say that low light is the worst scenario for macro, unless all you want to see is a third the thickness of a sheet of paper :)
There are others on this forum that will be able to give much better answers but that is my 2c.

What do you want to take pics of ?

As commented above normally you are fighting with small apertures and enough light even in good light- many of use flash because of this.
