i have searched high and low looking for 1 of 2 utilities; either EOS viewer utility or File viewer utility. all i wanted to do was modify the personal functions and white balance settings in my 1D, which did not come with any software. the only thing that canon provide is the updaters. i have found supposed registry work-arounds to install the updates as a full version. they do not work with these utilities. the newer EOS utiility allows a camera name change but fails with personal functions.
frustrated by this point i did what i should have done in the first place...place a quick query with canon about this. well i went to support and searched the phrase 'canon 1d personal functions'. here is what i found...
(turns out you only need the latest driver and a copy of photoshop)!
...copied from the mother-ship's website:

Details Print Friendly Version (external link) Issue: How do I set up Personal Functions and load them into the camera?
Solution: Setting up Personal Functions and load them into the EOS 1D.

How do I set up Personal Functions and load them into the camera?
The EOS 1D provides the option to set up to 24 Personal functions tailored to different types of photography and apply those settings to the camera, using your computer. These functions are divided into categories including Exposure Functions, Autofocus (AF) Functions, Drive Functions, and Other Functions.
Using the 'Combination' tab, you can view all Personal Functions settings. Additionally, you can save all settings to your computer, providing the option of later reloading that complete set on your camera. Thus you may create 'sets' of settings tailored for specific circumstances or shooting conditions, and change all Personal Function settings at once without having to reenter each individual setting. Detailed instructions for each Personal Function option are contained in Chapter 3 of the Software Instruction Manual.

  • With the camera connected to the computer and turned on, open Photoshop 5.0 LE (or another graphics editing program), and access the TWAIN Driver or Plug-In Module by selecting File then Import and TWAIN_32 (Windows) or Canon Digital Camera Plug-In 4? (Macintosh). (Photoshop is not involved in this procedure. It is used because you cannot access the TWAIN Driver or Plug-In Module directly.)
  • At the left end of the tool bar is the Camera Settings button. Click on it to open the Camera Settings dialog box. Click on the Detailed Settings tab, then the Personal Functions button.
  • The Personal Function Settings dialog box opens. It contains tabs for grouped sets of functions. Select the appropriate tab for the setting you wish to modify and make your selection. Continue until you have made all desired selections. You may review your settings by clicking on the Combination tab.
  • Click Apply (sends settings to camera but leaves dialog box open) or OK (sends settings to camera and closes dialog box). A "#" will appear in the LCD on top of the camera to verify that the camera has received Personal Function(s).
  • To save the ?set? of Personal Functions you?ve created, from the Combination tab, click the Save button. Select the folder you wish to save the settings in, and give this set an appropriate name.
  • If you wish to reload a set of Personal Functions created previously, click on the Open? button, go to the appropriate folder, select the desired set, and click the Open button. After reviewing the settings on the Combination tab, load them into the camera using the Apply or OK button.

using this procedure i was able to go in and fool with my camera. thanks canon!

You're using the firewire cable right? Not USB, firewire.

Yeah too busy trying to figure out his problem in a tiny IE window.

This did happen with Vista on older cameras. With my 1Ds MkI when I switched to vista the PFn wasn't accessible any more.

Everything works fine on both my Vista machines. Even my old printers and scanners.

Thanks for the tip. I was trying to use the Canon EOS Utility to set my pfnc.'s without success.

I looked for what you described in CS3, but there was no dialog to change camera settings.

As it turns out, you do not need PhotoShop or any other imaging software installed. After installing the 1D WIA driver, go to Contol Panel, Scanners and Camera, and there should be a 1D icon there. Right click it and choose properties. You can format the mem. card, change the user name/time/date AND set the pfnc.'s/custom WB/and Set X parameters.

Is this a windows thing? If not, I would like to the same thing from my mac...
