New to DSLRs, lens question

Hi guys,

I'm new to DSLR cameras and I've just bought myself a Canon 400d (with lens included).

I have a quick question (or two) regarding the operation of my new camera:

1. Can lenses be swapped with the camera switched on, what is recommended? I ask because I didn't attach my lens properly and whilst experimenting taking shots, the lens detached itself with the camera on.

2. Can the Compact Flash card be removed with the camera switched on?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jen

I have done both these things while the camera was turned on without any trouble at all.

As a rule, I try to shut down the camera when taking out the CF card, but I have switched lenses quite a lot without shutting it down with no ill effect.

If you must know...

Same as Jethro. I normally shut the camera off when changing lens or CF card. I have changed lens many times with camera on and have had no ill effects.

I have done both on my bother Xti, my 40D and my 5D and never had a problem. I will admit that it feels odd not having to turn the camera off first before doing those things and sometimes I do anyway, but it is not required.

I generally turn off to change lenses or replace the CF card, but have in the craziness of events, forgotten to do that, but nothing bad happens. Just don't yank the CF card in or out, our you can really mess up your camera.

The camera shuts off completely when the battery door is opened. Just be sure it's not writing anything to the card when you open the door.

No problem switching lenses with the camera on either.

Good luck! It's been 5 years and I'm still not getting it all. Practice is always recommended, though.
