finally: RAW thumbnail support in windows XP for the new canon cameras

for full windows xp raw thumbnail support, download & install (in this order)

1) Canon RAW Codec update for Vista http://software.canon-europe.com/software/00​26049.asp (yes it is fine for xp too)

2) http://www.arcsoft.com​/products/rawviewer/ (free windows shell plugin)

totally works - (but not if you do it the other way around which i did at first)

i have 350D & 40D, both now display thumbs in windows explorer

and install that first of all, the the other two as above

Your totally correct on Explorer but still won't open in Windows Picture Viewer but Fast Stone handles that task better anyways.

yeah picture viewer never opened raw anyhow, but thats fine cos all i needed it for was to see which photo was which, not to sort/select etc

i use lightroom for everything else, then photoshop for the exports

I use Canon's DPP as my picture "explorer". Canon keeps nearly the same 'feel' as windows explorer.


I'm more of the "less clutter in the OS" type of person though.

The .asp file you see is actually a web page. Click the link and it should open. If your browser tries to download the .asp page, then try a different browser.

ive had no issues with winxp pro SP2 & SP3

I couldn't get it to work either. Tried uninstalling Microsoft's thumbnailer and re-installing, but no luck. Also tried Canon Raw 1.3. Just installed Faststone viewer, it looks very good, and affordable (free).

is fastone a windows shell integration?

there are plenty of good viewers out there with good features, some even come with the camera lol, but the reason i like this solution is that i use windows explorer as my primary organisational tool - it irks me to have image files whose thumbnails i cant see

i even use the hacks to allow adobe photoshop & illustrator cs3 thumbnails to show in explorer - because i dont like being bulldozed into having to use bridge to identify my files
