I haven't tried XP yet, but in Vista, you only need the codec. All I did was visit the link below and then install the RAW Codec. It told me I needed to reboot, but I did not. After installation .CR2 files show as thumbnails in explorer just like .JPG files.

Once I have an XP system going again I'll try out the codec for XP, but if it is anything like Vista, third party apps are unnecessary.

its not like vista, raw viewing is not supported natively in xp. thats why they had the microsoft raw thumbnail viewer app (which only supports cameras older than & including 350D)

Thanks so much!! I have been trying desparately to get thumbnails working in Windows Explorer (XP SP-3) but all the usual methods (Microsoft RAW Viewer, etc.) didn't work for me. I didn't know at the time that Microsoft's software didn't support newer cameras (I have the 450D). This works really well and coupled with Picasa Photo Viewer (which supports CR2 files) it gives me exactly what I wanted.

for full windows xp raw thumbnail support, download & install (in this order)

1) Canon RAW Codec update for Vista http://software.canon-europe.com/software/0026049.asp (external link) (yes it is fine for xp too)

2) http://www.arcsoft.com/products/rawviewer/ (external link) (free windows shell plugin)

totally works - (but not if you do it the other way around which i did at first)

i have 350D & 40D, both now display thumbs in windows explorer

EDIT: if it asks for windows imaging to be enabled or installed, then visit this link:
http://www.microsoft.com …5def45ddd8&displaylang=en (external link)

and install that first of all, the the other two as above

now acrsoft it's no more free :(
