Photoshop Elements 3

Photoshop Elements 2 was included with the 10D and now the 20D. For the 20D buyers, has anyone heard if there's going to be a free upgrade to Elements 3, or if Canon will be shipping the 20D with PS E3 as soon as it's available?

I don't speak with any knowledge or authority...but I am certain that Adobe would not offer a free upgrade from v2 to v3. They're not doing it for people who bought v2, so I can't imagine why they'd do it for people who got it free through the purchase of a camera. Even so, the discounted price for licensed v2 users still makes it pretty attractive.

Normally I'd agree. I don't think that I'm owed any kind of replacement for my 10D's PS E 2.0 that I got 18 months ago.

But some people - especially new DSLR buyers who just plunked down a couple of grand or more for a 20D - might be a little upset that they got LAST YEAR'S Elements and especially one without any type of RAW conversion software. By the way I don't think that Adobe would be rushing to replace the 2.0, I think that it would be Canon since in this context it's a Canon not Adobe product. I just don't see Canon selling this camera with 2.0 as the program for very long and when they DO switch it'll anger the 20D buyers who bought early, if there's no upgrade program in place.

Since I won't be the only person to consider this I was just wondering if anyone has heard anything official from Canon, one way or the other.

Software programs that are bundled with hardware are volume purchases made by the hardware company from the software company. Usually, what happens is that the hardware company can get a better deal on software versions that are either not the latest or are special or limited (spelled C-R-I-P-P-L-E-D) editions of the software. It is unlikely that the hardware company will renegotiate the deal everytime a new version comes out unless the sotware is really outdated. Just count your blessings. It could have been worse. They (Canon) could have just as easily bundled the same software that comes with the G-series cameras or even gone with a vendor like Ulead or Roxio which is not uncommon with other hardware companies.

[edit]On the other hand, it is likely that the hardware company may need to work up a new contract when new hardware comes out. In that case, it may very well be possible that new software would get bundled with the new hardware. however, in the case of the 20D, I think Element 3 came out a little too late.

From my experience, other software companies have been known to allow free upgrades to the latest version of the software if the new software wasn't ready when the software bundle was put together. However, Adobe is not one of those companies that allow free upgrades for any of their software. You can get free pathches but never free release or version upgrades.

The Photoshop Elements 2.0 that you get with your Canon camera is not a limited or crippled version in any way. It's exactly the same as any other PS Elements 2.0 that you buy in the shop.

Even if I took advantage of the Adobe upgrade offer, the shipping is $20 to Canada, making it more expensive than buying it locally.

Adobe PSE3 is released, upgrade from E2 for $79, full ver $99. Has 16 bit raw converter.

Yes, it's only valid in the USA and Canada, according to the small print on the website. However, my brother lives in the USA, so I let him order the upgrade for me (using the serial number of my PS Elements 2.0). Before I did this, I even asked Adobe here in the Netherlands if I could do that. They said it's no problem, but I'd have to get it shipped to the Netherlands myself (which my brother did for me) and if I'd need support, I'd have to call the USA.

A great deal, if you have to buy Photoshop CS in the Netherlands you pay € 700 ($ 875) for the English version or about € 900 ($ 1125) for the Dutch version!!

Case anybody cares, I just got an email from Adobe that mine shipped yesterday (yes, I got $20 off), so I should have it in my hot little fists shortly.

That is true, except that the "off-the-shelf" version of PSE-2 does come with a reasonable manual.
