First time this ever happened to me was last week.

My son attends performance training in a gym.

Um, no cameras are allowed in that gym, ever. At all.

Ooops.

Case closed. That is private property. No issues.

But, the guy who interrupted the shooting seemed deeply concerned, even a touch scared (behind the gruff fake-coach persona) -- Why? Do people just walk into private places where they have no other business and start shooting?

Not exactly what you intended, but my wife tells me to put it away at least once a day!

Seriously, that sucks... what if you wanted to get shots of your son? But legally, he's right.

Disney, twice! Guy at one of the shows said no flash, no problem for me. Some dim bulb next to me flashes one off with his point and shoot and I take the smack for it because I have th big camera in front of me. So the next time I raise my camera I get, "Sir I said NO photography!"

I went to the Rocky Horror Show in Corpus Christi for a few years running. One year, one of the people I went with asked if they allowed non-flash photography and they said sure no problem. So I sat happily on front row center and took photos with my old Olympus P&S (which came out decently, considering). The next year I went to it again and took non-flash photos throughout the first half of the show. Not long before intermission, an usher came up and told me there was no photography allowed. I said I had been told it was OK as long as it was non-flash photography, and he went away. During intermission another woman came up and we had the same exchange, except that she then said she was the manager of the theater now and it was no longer OK.

So she demanded that I erase my photos. I said I couldn't as I had already dumped them to a portable hard drive (a partial truth obviously as I could have laboriously deleted everything from both the portable hard drive and the memory card). She looked exasperated and everyone in the theater was staring at us since I was sitting on the front row. So she then demanded that I give her my camera. I said no. Again, she looked exasperated while everyone looked on. Finally, she said well then you'll have to put it under your chair and I said OK. I love how these negotiations go when you do them in full public view. :p

Can you elaborate a little on what kind of gym and what kind of training this is? The description is not super clear to me.

I've seen "No Camera" signs at a local indoor water park. I have no idea what that is about....wierd pervs taking shots of women in bikinis? I don't know. The place hosts birthday parties and kids having fun....the kind of stuff where you expect cameras.

I drove 3 1/2 hours to an arena, stayed overnight, usual weekend trip. I get to the arena and my press pass isn't waiting at the gate, I contacted them a week before going and thought the company did too - they didn't. Some guy comes out and sees I have an NHL pass from the night before (this was an amateur league), so he gives me a pass for the days game. I run into the team photog and he acts ok, we talk about the company who he's not a fan of for a few reasons. So he goes and gets the team president to make me put my equipment away, just cuz he didn't like the company. So I got to watch one period and then said that was pointless and drove home instead of staying for the rest. He was trying to force companies to use his photos I guess by getting rid of anyone else that might be competition.

You forgot to offer them a "Girls Gone Wild" t-shirt or else they would have let you stay!

I went to a friend's wedding once and they had a pro photog as party of their wedding reception package. He saw my camera and told me I wasn't allowed to take photos at the wedding, but my sister had a small compact point and shoot and so did other people and not a word was said to them !

My 9 year old tells me to get rid of my camera every time I point it at him.

School swimming carnival, same thing, other mums with their crappy point and shoots were ok, but my 30D was a no go !

So I bought an Canon Ixus with underwater housing, I take it to school events now!

Sports agility and performance training; it is also used, on rare occasion, by pros. The no camera rule (apparently) exists due to the presence of locker rooms.

Others using cell phones were not stopped. I think I'll get a G9 anyway, for overseas snapshots; might not get snagged with that one.

Fear of large white lens syndrome (FLWLS), that's what it is, I tell ya! :p:cool::lol:

I just treated the guy who barked like he was speaking another language. He didn't get it. At all.

Earlier this month I went with my brother, a friend and his wife to Valley of Fire which is a State park in Nevada 45 miles NE of Las Vegas to take some pictures. My friend and his wife drive his 2008 Corvette, me and my brother drive seperate. We pay a per car fee to get into the park 5 or 6 bucks. No problem.

We drive along and stop from time to time to take pictures of the deep red cliffs, petroglyphs, etc. At one stop my friend parks his car in front of this big red cliff face and we (me, my brother and friend) all start shooting with our high end dslr camera shots of his car with this incredible background. When out of seemingly nowhere a park ranger comes driving up, quite fast, and parks between us and the car. He gets out and starts firing off questions like, why are we there?, who are we shooting for? Does the car belong to one of us? Is the girl in the car a professional model? and on and on.

We assure him we were just there for our own personal pictures, we were not shooting for profit, etc. The way he kept after us I could tell he didn't believe us, but it actually was the honest truth. He told us he was going to fill in his supervisor and would probably be back and that we would have to purchase a permit if they decided we were shooting 'pro' and we could even be fined for not obtaining one in the first place. (Nothing was posted about this at the entry gate).

He never returned so I guess we were OK. On the way out I asked the guy at the visitor center and exit gate how much a photography permit was to shoot commercially there. He told me he didn't have a clue and that it was probably posted on the wed site. So when I get home I look it up and the web site tells you to inquire at the visitor center!

So we did not have to put our cameras away, but, give me a break! I am hearing more and more about having to pay for a permit to take pictures if they are for commercial gain. I mean I pay to register my business, I pay park entry fees... WHY do they think this is a requirement? What does it regulate? It's just another way to make a buck and it really gets under my skin.

As it turns out One of the shots I got on that shoot turned out really nice so I had a couple printed on metallic 16x20. One for me one for my friend with the Vette. Now some other people who have seen it want a copy so I can make a few bucks selling them and I am even considering going to Chevy dealers to see if they want copies to hang in their dealerships or offices. One guy who owns a Vette dealership wants one already. So now that I can make money on it I wonder if I need to retroactively purchase the permit? :D
