Now I want the MarkII :)

I've had the Classic for less than a week and already I'm pining for an upgrade!

I am absolutely 'head-over-heels' in love with this system! The build, speed, look, feel, colour, sound, weight - oh boy, the list is endless. And that's even before I start praising the images produced from this fine piece of machinery.

ISO 800 is gorgeous! I love the image noise this camera produces at high ISO. It's not silky smooth - on the contrary...but it is imo almost film-like grain! Convert to B+W, and I'm in awe every time!

I picked up a very cheap well used 1D Body (76k actuations) which some might suggest is quite a high shutter count. I agree which is why I want to upgrade to a new body. I saw a thread which says the cost of shutter replacement can be more than what you pay for the body itself. If this is correct, then I'd rather spend my money on a body upgrade.

Anyhoooo - what can I look forward to if I step up to the 1DM2?

The 1DM2n is stretching the pocket a weeee bit but if there is a remarkable improvement to the M2, then I might be able to wing something. ;)

Currently doing Portrait/Wedding Photography wanting to move into the Sports Arena, Dog Agility, Wildlife etc. Obviously glass will be a big factor as well, but hopefully my lens collection will soon expand.

Cheers all for any feedback.

Sammy

Just curious, what's a 1D with 76K going for these days?

More resolution and not much else. You'll get better Noise handling by digital standards, but you'll lose that look in the BW grain you seem to like.

MkIIn adds some bells and whistles but underneath it's still a MkII

1D has some other benefits over the later models,
-Best in camera jpeg images IMHO
-Will AF with a SIGMA 500mm f/4.5 and 1.4X T-Con

76K is not really high for a 1 series, and I thought new shutters were coming in under $300.00 ?

76K? The thing is barely even warmed up. Whatever else your excuse for upgrading, impending shutter failure shouldn't be one of them.

Thanks CDS.

Now that I've had a couple of weeks playin around with the 1D, I concur

- the jpeg files are amazing to work with. I've had a play with the IQ settngs and Colour Matrix 4 / Parameter Set 3 work fine. Not sure if they're the optimum settings for most 1D users though. Is there a general consensus?

- I have noticed alot of the images (RAW) taken on my older lenses like the Tamron 28-75/2.8 and 28-105/3.5-4.5 are ... amazingly sharp - esp wide open! Mind you, I was using flash so that may have contributed to the image sharpness

- I'm still coming to grips with AF and tracking. It's almost a 3 tier combination and I start confusing myself with which-is-which. So far for BIF I'm using

C.Fn13:0 (45 AF Points/Centre AF point)
C.Fn17:0 (Single AF point)
C.Fn20:2 (Tracking Mod-Slow)

BTW I've reverted to shutter release AF as opposed to the *. For some reason I found this increased my keeper rate whilst panning with the 70-200+1.4TC.

Overall, I'm completely sold on the 1-series. :) I'm kicking myself as to why I didn't do it earlier. As far as High ISO is concerned, I'm more than happy with the noise performance and output size. Besides my 20D/30D are at my side if I needed extra ISO performance or increased resolution. I'm still lovin' that ISO 800 tho'!

I'm fairly defficient in the lens department, however I'm working on it. Current wish list: 16-35L or 17-40L with 50/1.4. The latter seems more favourable at this stage.

Thanks Glenn. I'm slowly appreciating the insignificance of shutter count as I trust this thing will probably outlast my 20D...or even my 30D at that!

I was entertaining the idea being able to shoot dual-media, but it's just a want and not a need.

As far as performance goes, this thing is definitely an improvement on my 30D in the AF arena and I'll be holding onto this beast for the rest of ITS life

I should also note the 1d Mark II is significantly lighter than the 1D. I never noticed until I had one version of each in each hand this weekend. I know weight doesnt (and shouldnt) matter to most, but its just one more thing the 1D mark II has the 1D beat on.

Don't forget- you can use custom tone curves as well. I have a custom Linear curve loaded myself.

Have you read "Getting the most from your EOS-1 Class..."? I suggest you download it and print it out. It explains all the custom functions and so much more. Download it from Canon here: http://www.usa.canon.com …/Handling/EOS_Digital.pdf (external link)

Are you sure about this? I did not think that there was much weight reduction at all between the 1D and the 1D Mk2..
The Mk3 is lighter.

My friend's wife shoots with a 1D, and this last weekend I held a 1D in my left hand, and my 1D II in my right. The 1D II feels almost a pound lighter. Also the MK3 is wonderfully light and fast. If I had $4000 to burn I would happily buy one in a heartbeat.

There is 30 grams of difference between the 1D Classic (1250 grams) and the 1D MKII (1220 grams) - which is about 0.07 pounds. Doesn't seem that significant to me. The batteries for both weigh 335 grams.

No, you're probably just right handed and so the weight "felt" less.
