They're all pretty sharp stopped down.

But the sharpest non L lens is the 50 f1.4.......I think its also the fastest. (If I'm not mistaken).

And of course, all the non-L primes are just superb.............maybe except for the 28 f2.8 (though I could be wrong about that too).

50mm 1.4 is a fantastic lense. In terms of non L zooms I still think the 28-135 IS is a reasonably sharp performer as long as you stay away from fully open and is a bargain.

100mm f/2.8 macro
50mm 1.4
135mm f/2.8 soft focus
85mm f/1.8
50mm f/1.8

.... probably in that order. (wide open)

I stopped in a large Los Angeles-Area camera store yesterday, and I asked the salesman what did he consider to be the best non-Canon lens he had in the store. He asked me what focal length I was looking for, and I told him I didn't really care---I just wanted to know what the best non-Canon lens was, period. He looked at me like I was nuts (well, I am, a little). After staring at me for a few moments (probably checking to see if my eyes were crossed and if I was drooling), he turned around and stared at the shelves where the 3rd-party lenses were stacked. He looked, and looked, and looked. Finally, he turned around and said, "I don't know. I've heard the Sigma 70-200 is pretty good."

This was interesting to me, because I know in my heart of hearts there are some really good third-party lenses out there, but few people seem to know (or agree) on which ones they are.

I bought another light meter.

I agree with you, i'm sure there are some pretty cheap pretty sharp primes out there, its just a matter of finding them.

You don't buy them because you use them. You buy them because they make you look like you know what you'e doing. Very cool things. I especially like the looks of the Pentax Spotmeter V.
