Below, 1D, 1DMarkIIN, 1DsMarKII, 5D, 40D, at ISO 800, 1600, 3200, shot with a 500 f/4 from about 15 feet. Set up the lens on a Wimberly Gimble and swapped out the bodies without moving lens. 100% Crops. I found it interesting the difference in size of the penny depending on size of sensor and number of megapixels.

RE: Noise ---> Look at the shadow areas in front and to the side of the penny. At least from this test the 40D definitely Rocks! The 500 f/4 ain't to shabby either!

Looks like Cosgrove was right!!

A lock for the Measurbaters Hall Of Fame...

That being said, your examples do make your point quite well.

Good Job

Ahh more measurebating, I wonder if some people (not referring to you specifically) have more 'tests' than actual, real, good photographs.

Cosgrove...lol.

Why is the 40D shot framed differently so that you can't see the dark side of the ledge? A lot of the noise is visible there.

Also, do you own ALL these cameras?!?!?

Thank you for the tests, why not do it in bad light with lots of dark area's. i know this takes time to do, so not trying to knock it, just High ISO is typically for low light situations and where the noise shows up is in the dark areas

"Also, do you own ALL these cameras?!?!?"

Yes, as a matter of fact I do, along with a 30D which is in Alaska with my wife, a 300D which I did test in this series, and a G6 and Pro 1. I just picked up mint 1Ds which I expect to receive next week which I am really curious about how it stacks up.

"Why not do it in bad light with lots of dark area's."

My thoughts exactly, I am going to set one up here soon.

"Why is the 40D shot framed differently so that you can't see the dark side of the ledge? A lot of the noise is visible there."

Crop factor. All cameras shot from the same distance on a 500 f/4. I wish I would have gotten the black/dark area in the comparison. However, now that you mention it I will crop the originals with that area and put it up, stay tuned.

I do believe the OP is referring to cosworth. He did a big ISO test to smack down measurebators and 5D fanboys.

David - that's a LOT of cameras!

Yet more proof that the difference is negligible and people need to stop pixel peeping and worrying.

I'm stumped as to why a 1D and a 1D MkII cropped differently with the same size sensors?

Also note that the exposure on the both 1D cameras are decidedly darker than the others,.
Underexposure creates more noise,.
If they had similar exposures to the rest, there comparisons would be even more favorable.

Good question. I would say pixel density, but I will leave it to the propeller heads on the forum to answer. All I can say is all the pix in the test were taken with the indicated cameras at the same distance from the penny.

Regarding the exposure, all pix were exposed in each camera in AV mode (f/4) with identical light. The exposure looks fairly equal to me in the originals, but my eyes are not the greatest so you could be right.
