I used to own an A510 that, although it worked perfectly, lacked some of the features that the newer models possessed. I wanted to be able to take movies longer than 30 seconds and I wanted to be able to zoom in movie mode. I decided to purchase an A720IS as a replacement. The first thing I tried was the movie mode zoom functionality. When I played the movie back I could hear a scratching sound every time I zoomed the lens in and out. I couldn't figure out if it was the lens or the zoom bezel that was making the noise. Try as I might, it would always record the sound during zooming. Thinking that it must be something wrong with the camera, I returned it. I found an A570IS model on sale the following week so I purchased it since it had all the same features as the 720. Of course, the first thing I tried was the manual zoom in movie mode and unbelievably, it did the exact same thing. I contacted Canon support and they stated that it was not normal and they wanted me to ship my camera to them for repair. Thinking I couldn't possibly be so unlucky as to get 2 different model cameras with the same defect, I asked a friend who just got a 720IS for Christmas if I could test the movie mode zoom on his camera. It did exactly the same thing. Is this just something that all current Canon Powershot series camera owners have to deal with? I am now in a dilemma of switching to a different manufacturer or just dealing with an annoyance that will surely drive me insane. I would just like to hear from anyone else as to whether or not they are experiencing the same problem.

It's not the lens barrel that's causing the noise because it does not move while filming, you only get digital zoom on the A720.
The sound you hear comes from the IS. The thing to do is to turn is to turn off the IS with the camera in video mode. So you need to put it in video mode then go to menu and turn the IS mode to OFF. I hope this helps you.

Thanks for the input. I turned off the IS and tried it again. It is better but there is still a lot of sound that is picked up from moving the zoom bezel back and forth. This must be a design flaw and there is no way around it. I guess I will just have to live with it.
