Hello there, i hope everyone is doing well.
I want to buy a good lens, mainly for fashion photography/ portaits as well.
I shoot with a EOS 30D.
One of the lenses i was looking at is the:

Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 L II USM

the other would be the :

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM

I would love to hear your input. Let me know if youve had experiences with these 2 lenses.Thank you very much. i appreciatte it.

Alessandro

Both lenses are fantastic and either would be fine for fashion and photography.

I'd have to give the nod to the 85mm in your case as you won't need the versatility of a zoom (you can walk a few paces back and forth to get the shot knowing your subject isn't going to move) and the IQ and bokeh (background blur) are incredibly nice.

The 70-200 is a very good lens which would also get the job done, but the 85mm lens just pips it for what you plan to use it for.

From what I've read, the 85 is unbeatable but may be a bit long for some settings, especially with a crop camera. You may want to look at two primes, the 85 and then something as wide as a 35mm (or the 24-70 2.8 range), but my inexperience will step aside and let others who know more about this chip in!

85L will be the one to go for. Stunning little gem (oops probably not so little after all)

For studio or fashion work, f5.6 is often the aperture used. But creativity can derive from such a wide aperture like f1.2

If by fashion you mean fashion shows the 70-200mm f2.8L IS is the one to go for as the 85mm f1.2 is too slow on the AF. The 85mm f1.8 is very good for that too.

Other lenses to throw into the mix depending on where you are shooting are:
17-55 f2.8L IS
35mm f1.4L
50mm f1.4
135mm f2.0L

Each have their strengths for certain settings (distance from subject, lighting etc)

I just shot (by chance) a fashion show at the local Barrett Jackson event last week. Depending on where you're set up, and if you'll be dealing with the typical 'runway' layout, you could probably go a couple different ways. I ended up sticking to my 24-70L the entire time. In hindsight, I kinda wish that for some of the shots/parts I had mounted my 70-200, but when the other pro photogs were there with their 2.8 IS version, it just didn't feel right to pull out the f/4L non-IS, hehe.

PS: I am very very VERY much a novice, so take everything I said here and my images with a grain of salt.
