I'm not a big wide angle guy. It's nice to lay with every once in a while, so 24 mm is usually pretty wide for me (on a 1.3 crop or FF).

that's why the question was 'if you only had 1 lens' .. I know the 'perfect lens' doesn't really excist, but I still want to know ;p

Started with the Tamron 28-75 and now have the 24-70 L as my default lens on 1.6X camera. It's wide enough for my style most of the time.

Going to place like Europe screams out to bring a lens with 74-84 degree AOV. 24mm on APS-C only provides 59 degree AOV, scarcely wider than a 'normal' (like using 38mm on 135 format)

I like the Canon 24-85mm ef as an outdoor walkaround, where stopping down gives me nicely sharp images and where this FL range serves 85% of my shots, (and can squeeze another 5% of shots in the PC on the long end...) but indoors and in tight places the 18mm on the kit would be nice, so I'm looking to get the new IS version, or trading the 24-85 up for a Sig 17-70mm...

I'm assuming that you mean 1.6x--so IMO 24 isn't wide enough for an only lens. Honestly if I had a 1.6x body and only one lens I think it would be the 17-55 f/2.8 IS. Pretty much as versitile as it gets.

If you're talking about a 1.3x crop, then 24 would probably be wide enough for me. :)

I tend to prefer a 24/28 to whatever lens on a 1.6 and then ultra wide, I don't tend to shoot much between 14 and 28mm but that's just me.

Many moons ago I upgraded my 28-80 kit lens on my EOS50 to the (at the time) very nice 28-105 (EOS5 kit lens).

This lens had been my primary walk about lens for almost 10 years, four of those with on a DSLR with a cropped sensor. For the most part 28 at the wide end suited me fine on the cropped sensor, however I tended to carry around my kit 18-55 I got with my 20D from time to time. On a recent holiday away I took around 800 shots, the 18-55 was used 8 times all for the same shot.

So two weeks ago I finally upgraded my old faithful 28-105 to the 24-105L, it will be interesting to see how often the 18-55 gets used now.

I believe it is very dependent upon where you are shooting! Having expressed my thoughts earlier in this thread about Europe and the need for 84 degree AOV there, I can also state that last year I spent two weeks in Australia and on South Island of New Zealand with my Tamron 28-75mm on my 20D most of the time, and only a relatively small part of the time used my 10-22mm
