Flash capacitors hurt. I've had a small, halfways charged cap from a disposable camera fire into my finger, and it wasn't overly pleasant.

Ditto. I was 14 and thought I was clever in taking my disposable camera apart. Biggest Scare Ever.

Thanks all. Your replys & warnings are appreciated. I am familar with working with HV & high frequency but reminders never hurt.

Anyway, by looking at some of the responces & links, it appears that there is no need for pulling appart the units &/or circuit diagrams.

I will follow up this thread with my construction (when I get arround to it:rolleyes:)

Again, thank you.

I've done it. I don't have any pictures at the moment. But I have a 6V SLA connected via dummy batteries to my 580ex- works like a charm.

The Flash will draw about 4 amps after a full pop. I've never managed to run down the 6V battery significantly. The one other nice thing about the SLA is it holds a charge for a long time ad is always ready to go.

I just got a parts list for the 580EX (MkI) from Canon Parts Sales... I think they'll email one to you if you ask (especially if you can't identify the part you want by part number).

Does anyone have a link to or know of a circuit diagram of either the 540EZ or 580EX (Mk1) speedlites?

Reason for asking, I was thinking of powering these off camera via a small 6v sealed lead-acid battery with a dummy battery set in the flash, connected via a cable through the battery door.

I have a sneaking suspision that by using the indivdual battery cells, that the internal workings of the flash pull of say 3 volts (by using just 2 cells) for certain aspects of the flashes electronics.

This is just at a thinking off the top of my head stage and I haven't even looked at the price of genuine or grey market batteries but I'm a bit of a DIY'er so I thought it would ask.

Failing this, does anyone know of the wireing of these external packs, (noteing that the external connections of the 580EX has 4 contacts).

Cheers

Mark

I have charged 540EZ using a nokia phone charger of 5.7v DC while testing, by connecting the + & - ends of the charger to the appropriate ends inside the enclosure. It works fine.

I have not observed any split-offs in the battery compartment that section off 3v for some operations, but it does appear that some part of the flash unit works on 3v.
