I have a 400d. Is there a way to get this to work on my camera like he says?

Not that I'm aware of. If there is it would be painful.

You can use it in manual mode if you want. The camera will trigger it just fine AFAIK. Or, alternatively you could use if off camera, learn more at www.strobist.com (external link)

Ahhhh yeah, in manual mode, no worries. But you'd get no benefit out of the extra smarts so you might as well pick up a Vivitar 285 or a Sunpak brand new for similar money ...

Good point. Didn't know if he wanted E-TTL or what. I have just bought a 285HV for my off camera stuff, looks like a great, cheap flash.

Nicky, I have 2 of these flashes that I use off camera and fire them with the Elinchrom Skyports. Typically, the flash is set to Manual control and 1/4th power. I usually set the zoom on manual at whatever setting I deem necessary.

AFIK, It won't work in Auto on the Canon digital cameras in Auto TTL. It won't even fire on my 20D.

BUT, it will work in Manual. I've played with it and with 5 or 6 test shots, I was able to come up with a proper exposure. The camera was on Manual (shutter speed and aperature) and the flash was also on manual. I just kept tweaking the aperature and the flash power until I got the exposure right.

Hope this helps.
Mike

I've got the 550EZ and use wireless triggers as well. I don't know if the trigger voltage is too high, so I wouldn't even try putting it on camera. I got my 550 for $60 used from a shop.

Sunpak 383s are 80 bucks brand new. They're a better option for manual-only flash...plus there's a useful Auto Thyristor mode.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

I just picked up one of these and a 430ez on the ebay for off camera manual fun. I wonder why you think a sunpak is better than this? It used to be canon's top-of-the-line flash, I would have thought that it is more rugged than a sunpak (I never have seen neither of them live).

still comes in under $70
BTW, does the 540ez have pc sync?

The only Canon flash with a PC sync is the 580EX II.

I wonder what is the trigger voltage on these EZ flashes? Is it safe to sync them through PC-sync chords with digital cameras?
