Winter as set hard here in Maine after the January thaw. Where this guy was swimming was 80% slush ice and this is a salt marsh. These ducks are still being shot at till the end of the month making them spooky! This one came from down river with little warning. f5.6 at 1/2000, iso160, 30D w/ 500mm f4 handheld (no bushhawk today). Bob

Thanks to all. I never use a tripod and do not have strong biceps. What I do is find a way to make this rig (w/ or wo/ the BushHawk) comfortable to carry and have the exposure set and lift and follow and shoot as if it was a shotgun! When I setup in one spot I find something to lean the lens on, most times it is my knee. Holding a 500 up to your eye would not work well with the limited field of view. I set these 3: M, AV and TV for various light conditions that might be encountered on each outing. Maybe if I shot in one place per outing a tri and gimble might be better. Thanks again,
Bob

Nice shot indeed, Bob. Hand holding is hard enough, but to do it in that weather is just unbelevable.

Ira, The cold is not so bad if the wind is light or better non at all. The good thing about winter on the Scaraborough Marsh is that most times it is all mine! Thanks Bob

Well Done Bob! A very good hh image of the CGE. I've spotted one here on the water, but not yet in flight. There's only a few that winter here in the Tucson area...tom

Beautiful bird in great light! Love it! Your description on continuing movement of the hand held setup is helpful. Still doubt that I am strong enough, but worth a try! Thanks again!
