I just spun mine. Of course it is loose (duh!) but I could not get a click out of it. I dunno....the thing has such a wonky FTM you get all kinds of reactions.

I think you can get the "click" out of it if you turn the focus ring back and forth quickly. I think the one I rented last month did that.

I can get a clunky smack out of all my lenses that way. Usually because I'm banging MFD or Infinity.

The 85L I rented would make a bit of noise (sort of a clunk) when turning the focus ring back and forth because the AF drive motor had to change direction. It's sorta like when you put your car from reverse into drive without coming to a complete stop... Nothing earth-shattering, but there just the same.

All right, only 'cause I likes ya ;) did I just take my 85L out of my bag, attach it to my 1DMKIII and check it out. Mine does exactly as he describes. If you listen as you turn it back and forth, it almost clicks like a clock, tick-tock. That is completely normal. It is engaging the lens to draw it inside the barrel and then push it out. And of course as every other owner knows, whether of the original 85L (as I had at one time) or the Mark II, the focus knob is smooth as glass and rotates with almost no friction whatsoever.

The buyer is either having remorse and wants his money back and coming up with a BS excuse, or he's just ignorant and needs to go to a store and try out a new one.

When I got my 300 f2.8, I couldn't believe how loud the IS mechanism was. I thought for sure the lens was broken right out of the box. It wasn't until people reassured me it was normal that I got used to it. In fact, I have never heard the noise of the IS again.

I tried one out in Seattle at a Ritz dealer and it does the same thing. Maybe he regrets it or maybe he's just being overly anal about this one? Who knows. Tell him to send it back and you'll give him the purchase minus shipping back.

Take it back on the [normal for online transactions] condition that he has to pay for return shipping and original shipping charges are non-refundable. Sell it to someone intelligent. Unless, of course, he's had it more than a week from the delivery date. In which case he would have had more than enough time to test it out and alert you of any problems and destroy it in the meantime.

I like cdi's idea. There are alot of j***offs out there, be done with him.

Let's be too hard on the guy, he's not well informed and somehow got it in to his head that the last copy felt different, I bet it's not a nice feeling spending all that money and thinking you have a bad lens. If he's a d*ck after you give him options then fair enough. Put a good case forward (this thread), if he's not convinced, he pays postage back and be done with it. The focus ring thing is a given now. As I and others have said, the click is the ticking noise the USM makes when driven in tiny increments, if you all try it you will all hear it, it's very quiet.

Thanks all - my other option is that as he has the purchase and warranty info, to take it up with Canon as a warranty issue. I've passed him the responses from here to try and allay his fears in the meantime.

If anyone has the time - some further comments from the buyer:

sorry to bother you again-just read thru some more of the replies you sent me. they helped me -thanks. its clear the lens is meant to rotate freely. to tell you the truth when i had my first copy of the lens i was suprised by how freely it turned and asked at calumet if this was normal which they said it was.

its hard for me to put into words what i think might be a problem with the lens. but when i gently hold the front focusing section between my finger and thumb it moves slightly side to side. this is what i meant when i said it makes a 'clicking' noise. but that might be misleading. its more of a 'knock' sound rather than a 'click'. btw when the camera is turned on this movement is not as noticable.

if you had time would you be able to ask the forum if anyone finds this sort of side to side/ up and down movement in their version of the lens?

Well being a focus by wire lens I would think this is normal. I never played with the lens with the camera off though but the lens should act differently with power vs without.

That's my feeling. I think the looseness of the focus ring is no longer an issue, and it's now down to the 'click/knock'. He's taking it into Calumet in the next day or so, and I feel sure they'll tell him it's normal.
