Could it be he means that it's slightly loose on the mount? The first 85L that I tried had a slight back and forth or side to side movement in the mount. It's really hard to describe, but maybe that's what he means?

If anyone has the time - some further comments from the buyer:

sorry to bother you again-just read thru some more of the replies you sent me. they helped me -thanks. its clear the lens is meant to rotate freely. to tell you the truth when i had my first copy of the lens i was suprised by how freely it turned and asked at calumet if this was normal which they said it was.

its hard for me to put into words what i think might be a problem with the lens. but when i gently hold the front focusing section between my finger and thumb it moves slightly side to side. this is what i meant when i said it makes a 'clicking' noise. but that might be misleading. its more of a 'knock' sound rather than a 'click'. btw when the camera is turned on this movement is not as noticable.

if you had time would you be able to ask the forum if anyone finds this sort of side to side/ up and down movement in their version of the lens?

I just hooked mine up the give it a go. With the power on, MF selected. If you rock the focus ring back-forth, very slightly, you here a slight knocking sound when you switch directions. Happens EVERY time you change directions, and it does sound wrong, but I'm sure mine and yours is fine.

I could understand if this was his first time with the 85 1.2, as its a very strange bird. I was convinced mine was bad until I RTFM. But, his second copy? hmmm.

Oh well, its NORMAL. He should come here and try to explain to us directly. He won't get beat up :)

Just tried what he described with mine and it does make a small knocking noise when you move the focus ring side to side off camera. I think it's normal...

There is a degree of play to be expected. It is not broken because of that. Some of my lenses have play at the mount also, in addition to what he's describing.

If the OP knows in his heart, as I'm sure he does, that he sold a perfectly functioning lens, he doesn't have to take it back unless he wants to.
