I have just purchased a Canon Powershot S5 IS...
Images from it are great, BUT...

When i used to print photos taken by my Olympus the image DPI was 320.
Now my Canon images are 180 DPI... and as i am told, the best DPI/PPI to print is 300...

I use Photoshop to alter the size and DPI/PPI before printing, and i am really confused as to why my new Cannon with 8 mega pixels is producing pics at 180 dpi...
While my previous Olympus with 7.1 meag pixels = 320 dpi

Is there any settings i can change on the camera ? i have tried many things...

I have set the image qualitys to the highest ( super fine and large )

The images i get are 3264 x 2448

I hope someone can help out with this, as it is confusing me...

Thanks all,

Scott

Scott - a 3264 x 2448 @180dpi will get you an 8x10 print at 300 ppi OR 13 X18 print at 180 ppi
Are you printing bigger?

The "dpi" setting in the camera is essentially meaningless; what matters is the setting you use in your image processing and printing application. You can set up to print either to a specified size in inches/cm or to a specified resolution in dpi. Either one, when properly configured, will give you the same size print.

Thanks for the rapid replies guys....

I will at the moment only be printing pics for a photo album..
So 6' x 4' or 6' x 4.5' will be the most used right now...
But some of the scenic ones i will want to print at maybe A4 size...

In Adobe PhotoShop i can use the crop tool to resize the pics to say 6' x 4'
and i have been told that they should be 300 PPI for quality prints...
(the adobe crop tool needs both the size and the PPI inputs)

Am i doing this right ?
(maybe there is some other program i need to be using)

Will prints look good if i leave them at 180 ?

Thanks again to you both for your replies....

All "300 ppi for quality prints" means is that you should have an image of at least 1800x1200 pixels for your 6x4" print. The EXIF DPI really doesn't matter. If your application asks what dpi to use you can say 300, but otherwise it's irrelevant once you've said to make a 6x4" print.
