Just bought my mother in law the A590IS, $165. Great price considering the A530 I bought my parents was $200 and has no IS for those shaky over-50yo hands...

Would be nice if this thread would also include the A720 IS which is a nice little Canon that gives you 6x optical zoom. I use it all the time.

The A720, however nice it may be, isn't "new", like the A470, 580 or 590. It had its own sticky when it was released.

All the "A" series use AA cells; rechargeable NiMH AA cells give best results.

Just bought, yesterday, A590IS. Seems an impresive camera for the price.
some of the features are almost like 35mm SLR's. Only one thing, there does not seem to be a battery level meter on display. Reading manual, it looks as if meter only appears when battery is low. Oherwise great camera.

Does anyone think the A590IS is better than the A720IS?

Thanks!

I just got my A590IS. Although the body is plastic (as if I didn't know) the fit and finish is good and it feels quite solid. Too bad the optical viewfinder is so small and does not have any viewfinder readout, such as AF and f/stop and shutter speed indications, all of which I think is very important.

I also have a 20D DSLR and tried to view my 590IS photos using the EOS viewer utility that came with the 20D, and the only thing that worked is that you can see thumbnail sized photos. So it looks like I'll have to install the Solutions Disk which is designed for the A590IS (it also has a ZoomBrowser and PhotoStitch)

Lastly, some people may like the enlarged focus check display on the LCD screen but I find this distracting for composition. And yes, I do wear glasses too.

I picked up an A590IS a few weeks ago for an upcoming cruise vacation. I really didn't want to bring my SLR and the A590 was on sale at the time for $139 shipped. I was very pleased with the way the camera handled some difficult situations. Here's two pictures that show some of the cameras capabilities.

The first shot is my wife enjoying a colorful beverage. I thought the camera did a great job with flash fill in the direct tropical sunlight. In the second picture, I was able to manually control the shutter to expose darker for a more natural evening shot. It also demonstrates how well the IS works. The shot was taken at ISO 200 and 1/8 second partially zoomed in.
