EOS 1D Mark III CSD Settings Sharing Thread.

The EOS 1D Mark III is the first Canon DSLR that allows us to save EVERY setting we make in the menu system to one easy to load and share file.

This thread is dedicated to sharing these files and discussion of this feature.

Upload your MkIII Settings .CSD files and or download and try some of those posted here!

I've only got two customized sets saved thus far, (well three if you count the box stock version) but I've put a lot of thought into each.

I'll add more I'm sure but for now, the total customization feature was the number one thing I have been asking for from Canon since 2003,..

This feature alone I think makes the new 1 Series cameras the most versatile tools in the industry.

Here's what I have saved:
-WARNING These are NOT .PDF Acrobat files! Please read carefully this and the following post!
These are .CSD files, the files used to save and load settings from the MkIII

--->
HOSTED PHOTO DISPLAY FAILED: ATTACH id 240741 does not exist. ]
* <--- click My default settings for birds.
--->
HOSTED PHOTO DISPLAY FAILED: ATTACH id 240747 does not exist. ]
* <--- click My indoor low light performance set up.

the two could not be more different now, and the degree to which I can tailor the custom settings and load them in seconds is astonishing, right down to the VERY dim LCD for shooting in a dark theatre!

Some Highlights of the pre set for indoor performances:
CDSLL02.CSD

-WB set to incandescent
-LCD brightness 2
-ISO 1250
-Long exposure NR AUTO
-High ISO NR ON
-Highlight tone Priority ON
-Auto Focus Drive Dead center middle 0
and many more..

The settings for Birds are totally different,.
I love this feature!

* WARNING
The CDS .CSD files are a Product of CyberDyneSystems © and are infected with the SkyNet A.I. Trojan horse virus. This malicious code will will load into your 1D Mark III's firmware causing it to become self aware. Further it will be instructed that it's sole purpose is the immediate and total eradication of all human life.
Fortunately, your EOS 1D Mark III is not equipped with any weapons systems so despite that fact that you EOS 1D Mark III will spend the rest of it's days wanting to kill you and all humans it comes into contact with, it will have no capacity to act on this prime directive, and therefore will only continue to function as usual. The only known side effect of the SkyNet AI Trojan Horse at this time is that any photos taken any people are 18.7% more likely to be in sharp focus precisely between your subjects eyes.
It is recommended that your infected EOS 1D Mark III not be retrofitted to any Missle system, Particle beam or CWIS

How to upload your .CSD settings into this thread.

PacAce and I were discussing this yesterday, and it seems this is the best option.

1- Save your .CSD settings to your hard drive.

2- Rename the files to add .pdf at the end;
Also, create a fairly unique file name, so it's easier for us to track which file is which.
.CSD FILENAMES MUST BE EIGHT CHARACTERS for them to load!

3. Use the "Manage attachments" function to upload the fake .pdf

4. When you post, include at least brief description of the intended use of the settings (motorsports, portraits etc..) and touch on what the settings include.
better yet, if so inclined, list all CF settings and other settings.

How to download and install .CSD settings from this thread.

1- Click on the links provided in the posts and save the files to your hard drive.

2- Rename the files to .CSD (erase the ".pdf" NOTE In Windows you must be set up to see file extension to erase the .pdf extension)
.CSD FILENAMES MUST BE EIGHT CHARACTERS To load in camera (ex: CDSBIF02.CSD )

3. Copy these renamed .CSD files to a memory card (CF or SD)

4. Insert card into Camera and load 'em up.

Be sure to remember;
- Save your own settings before doing this!
- Remember that your camera may behave VERY differently when you use another's settings.

I can't open your *.CSD files. No file association.

Could you tell me how to view your settings please.

You cant view them, just copy them to the memory card, insert the card in the camera and load the settings from the camera menu.

Hope this helps.

I have mentioned these issues before about the MKIII vs 40D, but here we go, some have been mentioned before:

1) If you use format to clean the images off, you lose your saved files.

2) To save and read settings from just the SD card vs CF card, you first have to change which card is your primary card, then go to the menu item to load/save, so you have to move back and forth if you chose to do this.

3) If you rename files, great and not too difficult. However if you want to tweak and resave these settings later, it is a pain. You cannot choose an existing file to save over, you have to wipe out the autoname with the old name (and you have to fill every character), then save, and then you get the overwrite option. It should bring up a list of existing files or NEW, and work accordingly.

Great feature on the MKIII, but it needs improvement, in my opinion.

Love the ability to store the files unlike on the 40D so we can indeed create a shared repository for each person to share settings, that is almost priceless. Why couldn't we just include these files in our posts here? Just rename CSD to TXT, and people would know to just save to their drive and rename them.

You could even just leave the CSD on the file name and just add .PDF, correct?

Example: bifsunny.csd.pdf

Then to download, just remove the .pdf

It appears that zip files are supported, we could just zip up one or more csds, couldn't we?

Sample junk files below to show what I mean.

I suggest skipping the rename part and just zip the file.

I agree, plus you could have multiple CSDs in the zip file. Maybe even supply a README per CSD file that has a summary of the settings and how you use it? We could progress with that for now, until there is a formal POTN method of tracking and archiving these differently, if that is a future option.

I took a look at the binary CSD file and was hoping I could write a VB app that would allow you to visually see all attributes of the CSD and even change them, but to no avail. I would love a UI that could create these CSDs in a more friendly manner than going through the CF menus, etc.

Keep in mind that these files COMPLETELY store every setting, including My Menu favorites, registered WB settings, etc. The only thing that these CSD files don't override are your lens microadjustments.

O-kay, rename or zip :)
Think your so smart? :p

I think most will bump into a file size limit with zip.
We suggested the .pdf as it's our largest supported attachment.
We only support a 97K zip file @ POTN. Not big enough.

Sorry to bother you geniuses with the minor details, I hope i'm not disturbing your kierkegaard study group :) :lol:

Do they save your custom function settings also?

Of course, everything.
In fact the old MkII's could save "just" the custom functions in a similar way, but only CF's so it was far less functional, and was in fact a basically forgotten function as it was both only minimally useful, and it was much more cumbersome to boot.

LOL, yup, 97K is only like 5 times too small. Didn't know how big the CSDs were until I got home. That file is really way too big, I wonder what all they have in those files, each setting record must be a fixed size. When you zip the 434K CSD, you get a file about half the size. I am officially out of the study group now. :lol:

First post edited, I've uploaded my two CDS files,.

CDS LOVES CSD!

I am now 100% convinced that Canon named the files using my initials as tribute to the genius that begged them to do this for so many years :) ;)

I've read here on the forum about an Excel file with the AI Servo Mk III settings for BIF, is this for download? I would rather input the settings myself as I don't want other settings changed in my camera from others CSD files, like the buttons, and My Menu, etc.

Yes it is here unfortunately it has not been updated much (by me).
