In Scott Kelby's CS2 book in the chapter on bracketing with camera raw he describes how to drag and drop one image onto another using the move tool and holding down the shift key. I have tried this method with CS3 but no matter what I do the two images will not align or "pin register" as he calls it.
Is there something that I am missing here or is there another method for CS3?

John

This works the same in CS3 as in CS2. After you finish the drag and drop operation, do you see both the "Layer 1" and "background" layers?

...move tool and holding down the shift key

... Should be working for you. As long as you are holding down the shift key as you drag one copy of an image onto another, they are automatically pin registered.

...If the images are the same size. Otherwise it won't work.
Copy-paste will work as well.

Obviously the images need to be taken off a tripod to begin with ;)

I don't know if this will help ...

Sometimes if I'm trying to align two layers, I change the blend mode of the top one to "Difference" then use the arrow keys to nudge the layer into place.

I barely know squat about photography, but here's something I know ...

If your bracketed images aren't lining up perfectly, maybe you're not using a cable release when taking the shots? The act of physically pressing the shutter button can move the camera ever so slightly, enough to bugger up your efforts.

The images have to be identical so far as content, position in the frame and dimensions (pixels, not any other measurement). If these conditions are not met then putting one point in register will only move other points out of register.

While it is preferential that the images be taken with a tripod they do not actually have to be. They do however have to have some complimentary content that can be lined up. I have taken many a shot freehand making sure that I do not recompose other than change exposure. While they are close they are not identical. It is from the same camera and I do not do any cropping prior to this.

I would shift drag the layer from one image to the other. Shift or CTRL click on both layers in your layers palette so they are both actively selected. Go to Edit-Auto Align Layers. I always use the Auto option (first one) and it does an amazing job.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.
