San Tan Valley, Arizona

Surprisingly, it was one of the coolest days in awhile. Only hit 98 that day.

On a backstreet in Newcastle

There used to be a hand-painted sign here that said "SUPERVISED PRIVATE CAR PARK" but it was only ever supervised by feral pigeons. It is still used as a car park, and increasingly rare to find it empty, but it's one of my favourite hidden views of the city. Very difficult to frame successfully given the way the scene naturally vignettes vs. the leading lines at the bottom. I never tire of trying, though :)

I love it--the gloom, contrast, grittyness, soft light, colors, even the trash.. Keep shooting, and thx for posting this.. Does anyone live there?

Thanks :) I love it too, it's like a little glimpse into Victorian Newcastle from just outside one of its busiest party streets, the legendary Bigg Market. The white doors on the right which you can just about see go into a restaurant kitchen. I've tried for years to get the lighting right and a chef having a smoke, would make the picture complete, but have never managed :) The new building on the left is residential, I think, and the old houses at the back are literally falling apart now and have been on the town planner demolition list for years and years. A lot of Newcastle is going that way and being replaced by identikit student halls which is a real shame.

Yeah, that's a nice capture. I like it a lot.

Have you considered light-painting at night with long exposures?
That could provide the framing you're after.

Might be worth a go if I'm ever passing after it's dark, right enough. It's not necessarily a place you'd want to spend a lot of time in the dark, alas.

I always think that what it needs most of all is a silhouetted figure bottom left to balance the right hand kerb track. The left kerb is somewhat balanced out by the manhole on the right but it always feels to me that there's a gaping hole in the frame about 30% in the from the left at the bottom.

It also works really successfully when there's an expensive car parked up in there. I thought I'd taken a few but I can't find any at the minute. It's a great juxtaposition.

Yes, it's common in abandoned structures which are open.
It piles up high under the birds' favorite roosts.
