I just found a Sony HVLF1000 flash in the storage and was wondering if it'll work on my 20D with an adapter or something. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

It will not be compatible with the E-TTL flash metering system of Canon DSLRs. But it still may be useable if it is a traditional automatic flash.

First, check the trigger voltage to see if it's safe for your camera (under 250v). Info here:

Second, post pictures of the front an back of the unit, showing all connections and controls clearly. From that, we can most likely figure out what type of flash it is.

Thanks Curtis. I took a few shots of the flash. It says TTL flash metering on Amazon.

The lack of controls on the flash indicate it is not a traditional automatic flash and has no manual power control. It is a TTL flash made for Sony cameras.

If it works at all on your 20D, most likely it will only fire at full power, which severly limits its usefulness.

Thanks for the help Curtis. What will I need to get in order to get this flash to work on my 20D? I want to give it a shot.

Edit: Is Hot Shoe PC Sync Adapter what I need?

It's not worth the trouble. Both the flash and the camera are made to work with their own proprietary technology. That flash requires communication from the camera to work properly, and the 20D doesn't speak its language.

If you want a cheap, but fairly useful flash, try a Sunpak 383 for $80. There is a learning curve but at least it's useable.

If you want a good, basic flash that is designed to work with your camera, try a 430EX Speedlite.

If you don't have a camera compatible with the Sony flash, put it on E-Bay.

Thank you again for your input on this. I'm not in need of a flash, I just wanted to play with it since it didn't cost me anything . It's a bummer that it won't work with my camera though. :(
