quick question of aperture on P & S...

so it's a rainy sunday...which means i've finally gotten around to reading Understanding Exposure...and in it he mentions that on fixed lens digital cameras an aperture of f/2.8 is the equivalent to f/11 on a SLR...i had never heard this before...and am just wondering if this is true for all P&S's? thanks

He's confusing you (what I must say, I find common in his writing; he's not as lucid as many other writers) through mixing depth of field and exposure characteristics. What he's referring to isn't exposure, but depth of field at f/2.8 on a compact digital being close to DoF at f/11 on a full frame SLR.

ah ok...so it's not really the amount of light that's coming in...it's more in relation to the sharpness of the background, or the bokeh you're able to get...right?
