I've always wanted to do weddings, but I've never had opportunity to shoot one, and i definitely didnt want to be the primary shooter for something that couldn't be redone. I was finally able to shoot one over the weekend as a backup to the regular photographer who was a friend of the family. Here's some from my first attempt! All shot with my xti/70-200 2.8 IS L. in retrospect i think i should shoot with a wider lens with flash if i am the only photog at the wedding.

I wish i had a little fill flash for the faces.

I see what you mean about the faces. I'm sure you know more about it than me but do you think it would have helped if you'd manually focussed, set AWB to cloudy and spot metered for the faces?

Spot metering definitely could have helped! The sun was going in and out of the clouds so I'd have to keep changing the WB, but spot metering and a little fill flash definitely could have helped bump up the quality.

Leave WB set on cloudy or sunny, irrespective of what the sun does after that. If you're shooting RAW you'll have consistent results that can be adjusted later.

I don't have any post processing software so I've never had a reason to shoot RAW. I heard that there were inexpensive alternatives to CS3, do you know any off the top of your head?

Google's Picasa is as good a free editing package as any for jpegs; don't know of any for RAW?

I'm jealous because this is something I want to do in the near future, once I'm comfortable with my camera settings!! Looks to have been a joyous wedding!

Cheers

Picasa can handle RAW files from a multitude of cameras. I have used it without any problems with RAW files from a Rebel XT and also a 30D. I did have problems with the Linux port and 30D RAW files but under Windows there have been no issues.

Since it's free, I would say give it a go - whatcha gotta lose but a bit of time and bandwidth...

And to save you even more time...here's a link http://picasa.google.com/ (external link)
