I've had my EF-S 10-22mm for a couple of weeks now and I've been so impressed by the image quality and in particular, the rich colours that it produces compared to my EF 28-135mm.

I was wondering if wider lenses produce richer colours in general or is it just that the 10-22mm is a much better lens optically compared to the 28-135mm?

I doubt that's the only factor - the 70-200 f/4 isn't particularly wide but the quality of the images is amazing.

The longer the zoom range, the more difficult it will be to keep contrast and saturation due to complexity and element count.

I think this time it is a matter of a much better lens.

That's it! :)

Honestly while not necessarily a top-of-the-line lens, the 10-22 contains some pretty impressive lens elements compared to other Canon consumer lenses. Many people feel it should have an L designation because it shares similar glass technology as many L lenses, which is uncommon for a consumer lens.

I think its more that the 10-22 is just a better lens. As popular as it is (I think mostly because its a kit lens) the 28-135 isnt really a very good lens.

I had to read it twice myself. What Ed was trying to say, more or less, the 10-22 is an EF-S lens. "L" Designation is the official Canon Pro brand of lenses. Unfortunately the Pro series of camera (e.i. 1D, 1Ds, 5D) do not support EF-S lenses. Therefore, being an EF-S disqualifies any lens from being branded a Pro "L".

When you compress distances with a long telephoto, you are also compressing everything else in the scene including atmospherics. Heat shimmer, smog, dust, etc are all (for lack of a better term) ampliphied by the compression so yeah, I'd say wider will look cleaner.

It is when I use it:D

It does seem to really favor my Elan 7e to my 30D though.
