I just did some similar tests over the weekend, both on my 5D and 1Dmklln and with the 70-200 f2.8L IS and the 300 f4L IS. I had to use manual focus even on the 1 series with the 2.8 since it constantly hunted. I wish I had a focusing aid like in my old A-1 days but think I got the focus pretty close. Results of my tests along with the full files can be seen at the end of this album.

Thanks for posting those, Larry.

Another shot is in this thread:

Granted that they're slightly OOF, but can you see the 3 spider webs?

This thread is very helpful. I also do most of my shooting in MI and I know what you're talking about completely.

Here is a recent test with my 70-200 f/2.8 L IS and a 1.4 Canon TC II. Both shots are 200mm wide open, the first without the TC and the second with the TC, winding up at approx. 280mm.

It looks good, but I would have expected that with the 1.4X TC.

What do you expect with the 2x TC?

I wasn't sure, which is why this thread exists. :D

I had the same combo and was amazed at how much contrast you lose on that lens when putting the tc2x on it.

Stopped down one stop, it's not terrible. It does lose contrast, but that's why we have PS? ;)

I need (1) another option to the 100-400 I don't have that's (2) pretty good outdoors & (3) faster without the TC than the f/4 for indoors. So it's a compromise I think I'll be able to live with. We'll see this Summer.

I'm considering buying either the 1.4 or 2 for my 70-200 F2.8 thats why i got in this thread in the first place.

Anybody know how they compare to other brands?

If you want to compare them, there is almost too much info in the Teleconverter Sticky

Well that settles it. I couldn't dream of getting those shots, so no concerns on image quality for me...haha.
