I took this picture of Vikke late last summer, in his 13 year old age, when his strengths were already weakening. He was put to sleep last November. - He was a kind companion of my father-in-law and my family as well.

Truly a beautiful beast. We also had to put our 13 1/2 yr old Lab to sleep last year. No possible way of replacing him but we did buy another lab pup, now 12 weeks old.

What a wonderful portrait. Looks very noble, loyal and steadfast. Very sorry for your loss but there's a very special place for pets and the people who loved them.

A gorgeous dog and a gorgeous portrait............

Rainbow Bridge.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Thanks all for your kind words.

The story about Rainbow Bridge was very touching. Thanks dseered for sharing it.

We are still considering to frame it or not. My wife thinks this a bit too sad looking picture compared to the original color version. I think this b&w version tells a lot of his character and last months, but I admit could be happier.

Olli,
I love this picture! So sorry for your loss. We had to put Grace, our mastiff, down awhile back and there won't be another one (not another Mastiff anyway, to short of a life span).

Thanks, Deltadarlin. Understand your comment about the life span. We have also bichon, born the same month as this lab/Finnish hound (50/50), but still going strong (ok, a bit deaf and blind, but still ...).

Oh what a beautiful portrait! You can just tell how soft his ears were to stroke. The wisdom in his eyes is a wonderful capture. So sorry for the loss but really, a wonderful image of an obviously well-lived creature. Thank you so much for sharing.

Warm regards
Nan

May you all have many friends waiting at the Rainbow Bridge...

I just don't know what I will do with all the goldfish :-)
Excellent image as well, really captures the eyes greatly. Sorry for the loss of your dear friend.

Yup, that one brought a tear to my eye. He looks so much like our dog Max and he is going on 13-yrs.

Frame that photo, it's a keeper.
