Rule: A small light source casts light that falls off in intensity, as the distance grows greater. A background will always be farther from the light than your subject. So without a separate light source for your background, it can never be brighter than the subject in a studio environment.

As Wilt said, with the light in front of the subject, there will be no way to get the background brighter than the subject. However, if you place the light somewhere between the subject and the background, you'll be able to get the background a lot brighter than the subject. However, you will need some sort of reflector to bounce some of the light reflecting off the background towards the subject if you don't want the subject lighting to be flat.

All you need to add some light to your background is a Sunpak 383 and an optical slave. Less than $100 and you're in business.

Stick a gel on it for more fun!

It will flash when your D-lites flash, if you attach an optical slave sensor to it.

It will do the job of making the background brighter. How well it can compete with your D-Lites is a complicated question. It's important to understand the relationship between power, efficiency, distance and aperture.
