From the Alien Bees website:

2. Remove the shipping cover. Your flash unit arrives with the flashtube and modeling lamp in place, protected by the black polycarbonate shipping cover. You must remove this cover prior to operation. The cover is held in place with the four holding fingers on the front faceplate of the unit, which are used to hold accessories as well, such as reflectors and softbox speedrings. To remove the cover, squeeze the bees’ antennae. These antennae are actually the lever controls for holding and releasing faceplate accessories. When squeezed, the four holding fingers on the unit’s faceplate will contract, allowing you to pull the shipping cover straight off of the faceplate. Releasing the antennae will allow the holding fingers to expand back into the holding position.

Squeeze those two levers together while holding the black plastic cup. When it releases pull the cap straight off. It stays in place on mine when they are stored.

As a side note...

I dunno about everyone else but my shipping cover goes right back on every time i'm done using them. It's a good, custom-fit protector and the minor inconvenience is definitely better than breaking a flash tube.

Just my two cents!

Not sure what to do with this space yet... but in the meantime, here's my Little Bitty Gear List:lol:

If my lights are on stands I don't use the cover. If the come off the stands I replace the covers. It's a good practice to protect the flash tube and modeling light.

I've seen the pictures of your wife.

The AB cover spontaneously combusted just so you would get down to business. ;)

I hope you got them off. It can appear a little tricky at first, but it's not as hard as it seems if you follow the instructions. :)

If all the ROFL smileys weren't lame, I would insert one here.
