I own a 10d and love it, considering a 40d so should I wait after PMA to buy. how long before a replacement is rumored for the 40d? if more than year away I might go for it.

Since the 40D is less than a year old I'm guessing it'll be more than a year before there is a replacement.

There will always be a rumored replacement right around the corner. The EOS 40D is certainly a fine camera from what I've seen so kinda doubt you'd disappointed.

Go for it

More than a year for sure.
I think we've established an 18 month cycle, and so the 50D will probably be announced at PMA February 2009.
Would someone please slap me for just saying that?

Um, the 40D is far less than a year old.
How about those 1DMKIV rumours?

The 10d is a great camera. Yeah, the 40d is better in several respects...but it's not a vast improvement over what you already have.

40D hasn't even been released a year yet, so it's highly unlikely to have a replacement anytime soon. It's definitely going to be more than a years wait. I'd say at least a year and a half to 2 years. Just go for it now.

wow i doubt that will be case... 2 and half years..

the 30d got a very short run really... and the 40d is presentling with a few issues.

I'd give it another 6 months before the rumours start and then a release just before xmas..

However its a good camera so go for it.

boy i sure disagree with that. one of the best things the 1.6 crop cameras have going for them is the ability to use ef-s lenses like the 17-55 IS and the 10-22, neither of which will work on the 10d.

i think the 40d is light years ahead of the 10d for this reason as well as many others :D.

I wonder if the price of the 40D might drop a bit now that the Xsi has come out with so many of the same features....... (maybe just wishful thinking but you never know!)

It depends what budget you have put aside for this. The 10D is old technology now and there has been some significant improvements since it's release. The 40D is a nice affordable ungrade for this camera, as for a replacement, thats still 12 - 15 months away, if not longer.

The question you should be asking yourself is, why do I need to upgrade, is there something that your camera is not able to deliver.

I'm sort of in the same boat, have a 20D, great camera, but would like a faster autofocus performance for motorsport and aircraft. There's nothing really significant in the 40D that pushes me to upgrade, although there has been improvements. So my next camera will be the 1D MkIIN as this offers everything I need and my budget can cope with.

I am still learning with my 40D and love it. I have just taken up photography and my mate has a nikon. He tried to get me to by Nikon but the 200 has not got the features that the 40D has and the 300 is more expensive.

I like the fact that i am a Canon man and the other reason was when i bought it it was a new model out at the time so i couldnt go wrong.

I spent 4 months deciding and i am not disappointed.

I hope i get a good year or more before i upgrade or my missus will open a can of whoop ass on me. :)

Ian

And here are how rumors get started...

I guarantee you there will be no release or info of a new release anytime in 2008. IMO, I would state that the 40D is the best well-rounded camera Canon has made to this point, and I have had every single crop body to date except the Dxx series. I would say just get the 40D, you won't look back.

And I too would like to know what these documented issues are that are impacting the 40Ds. A few have issues here and there, but most likely well within the tolerance of error found in large manufactured numbers, unlike what happened with the MKIII.
