Why is the blue of the sky so noisy in this photo? Any suggestions?

just guessing, 'cause no expert here, but looking at your EXIF, I think you had too much ISO for the rest of your settings. Maybe you'd have been better off to rduce the ISO to 200 and then close down aperture a bit to lower that extremely fast shutter speed?

RH

It looks like this is caused by too much sharpening (Halo) this is probably a fairly large crop also.

Shooting in RAW would also help. You're picking up both sensor noise and jpeg artifacting. Ever since switching to shooting in RAW I seldom if ever pick up that much noise against blue skies. Canon's DPP 3 has a pretty good noise removal tool if you go that route. The advantage of shooting RAW also gives better dynamic range than jpeg which is always a plus.

I have noticed the same thing with my 40D blue skies.

Thanks guys - all are valid points (sharpening, ISO and jpeg artifacting). I need to go back and look at the unaltered image and see if it's as noticable.

The jpeg artifacting makes sense since there are so few colors and color depths in the photo.

I still have my Rebel XT so I might also try to do a side-by-side with a blue sky.

You also have noise in the goose, so I'm betting it's from cropping and resampling.

Actually, I find my 40D to be much better than my 30D here.

Odd, isn't it?

Prevention(limit your cropping, use appropriate exposure and ISO) is always better than cure(noise removal tool). :)
Post the original image (resized) without pp and cropping, together with the exif. Then I'm sure you'll get more accurate advice and suggestion.

We don't get a lot of blue sky here, and I got rid of the 30D late last year, but I don't remember it producing a lot of noise at ISO 400. The first 40D blue sky shot I opened kind of jumped out at me for noise, if you know what I mean. :)
