Ebay Pics?

I agreed to put a ring for a friend on ebay, was going to take a few pictures of it, and just needed some advice on how to get the best shots possible with what i have: a 20D, 430ex, and a canon 24-85 lens.no macro lens or ringlight or anything, nor a box-setup for the item, it's just a one time thing. Anyone have any experience with such shots, camera settings, etc.?thanks much!

Plain seamless background (velvet?), probably dark/black for jewellery I'd guess (?). Get in close, use a tripod and a small aperture to ensure adequate depth-of-field.

You could try lighting using household table lamps/spot lamps etc. just try and match the lamp temperatures otherwise the WB will be a PITA! - I'd shoot a grey card to ensure WB is accurate.

Build a ghetto light box. There's are a few threads on the forum about them. Box, white paper, tape, and a cutting tool are all you need.
