Howdy all.

I am currently fending off a cat who wants my chex mix. Silly cat.

I've decided that the next big purchase (after all the other big purchases) will be a mat cutter. Sheesh. Having mats cut for "odd sized" prints (8x12) cost more than the prints themselves did.

Jamie and Zane... this is a real basic setup and you still need away of triggering it... amazing how it is $400!

Well... that gets tough.... AlienBees are preferred, and one AB800 might be better than some of those lower-power kits... but just the strobe is $279... then you need stands, etc...

There is always the off-camera flash method... use cheap, older, manual flashes like the Sunpak 383 or Vivitar 285 or Nikon SB-24, -26, and -28... you can use them on lightstands with umbrellas and softboxes.

They are lightweight, very portable due to being all battery operated, and pretty darn flexible in use.

I can create a "shopping cart" later on today with a simple two flash kit (and all the needed add-ons)

This is the route that the PermaPuddles and I went as well.

You can get the flashes off of eBay pretty cheap ~$50. PermaPuddle went with the elinchrom triggers (as recommended, by Curtis, I believe). I went with the Pocket Wizards.

Odd how the light stand costs so much. Looks like you could rig one up out of something else.

I have purchased from this guy on eBay (external link), as has Lisa. He sells good stuff at reasonable prices. His shipping is lightning fast. He's in Texas.

I've never tried his light stands, but they might be worth giving a shot. They're a lot cheaper. And if people were close by one another, you can by a lot of them and split it.

I already have one of those. As with anything you can probably build or rig something but I find it is always faster and easier to use the right thing which results in a better result. Having the right thing that is easy to use also means I spend more time on the project instead of getting tired of messing with what I rigged.

Agreed.

If you're inside, you can use ballhead bungees to attach your off-camera flashes to things as well. But having a stand is a must if you're going to be doing much with you off-camera flash.

This has to be the wildest expression I've ever seen on his face:

What caused it? Cute, though.

Standing already, wasn't he born just like 2 weeks ago? My time does fly.;)

Morning...just got back from the Urgent Care...son has strep throat.

Never fun, hopefully the antibiotics will kick in quickly and he will at least feel better in a day or two.

I'm PM'ing Curt regarding the light question and response from Scott. Looks to me like the shopping cart is pretty comprehensive and similar to what we have.

Interesting. I've oftened wondered if I could get decent people (and pet) shots if I had decent lighting. I've just never wanted to make the investment just for a hobby. I might give it a try someday at this guy's prices, though. Someday... :D

I'm sure the real thing would be worth the investment if you were going to use it a lot. But sometimes the home-made devices do work the best, as they are truly custom made.

I'm still trying to figure out how to make a home-made turning bar for the kid. They want $400 for them online and they are just a bunch of pipes. The trick here is to make it safe.

Hi All

Looking forward to seeing more on this discussion of lighting, something that holds interest for me in the future.

A question for you fine folks, and I know it has been covered before. My niece Molli, is doing a fund raiser to help finance her way on to a trip on a tall ship later this year and is selling magazine subscriptions. I thought I might get one or two from her. What do you guys like of the choices I have.

I'll be back in a bit, I have to run out and get some venting for Lisa's brand new washer and dryer. Man, if we keep having to replace stuff like this, and get dental work done, I don't know when I'll be able to get the camera gear I want. :)
