Howdy all.

I am currently fending off a cat who wants my chex mix. Silly cat.

I've decided that the next big purchase (after all the other big purchases) will be a mat cutter. Sheesh. Having mats cut for "odd sized" prints (8x12) cost more than the prints themselves did.

The best mat cutters are made by Logan. I've used this one (external link) and it worked very well.

Jamie and Zane... this is a real basic setup and you still need away of triggering it... amazing how it is $400!

I bought this kit (external link) from Novatron a number of years back and it works like a dream. It's not suitable for outdoor use unless there's a power source as it is a powerpack design and not easily battery powered. I got mine with two heads, stands and umbrellas, but there was voucher for a free third head. I had to buy the third stand. The stands ar somewhat flimsy but do the job. I paid right around $1000 for mine so I don't think this is a representative price. The Novatron site is currently undergoing a re-build so this was the only picture I could find.

On the rare occasions I use mine, I trigger them with the standard PC cord. This is somewhat limiting, but the kit will work with a wireless trigger no problem. One thing to keep in mind when using a system like this is trigger voltages. My kit was old enough that the trigger voltage would have fried my D60 had I used the lights with it. I was able to return the power pack to Novatron and have it modified for a lower trigger voltage. Since the 20D, the cameras have been able to handle a trigger voltage of up to 250v, so it shouldn't be a problem.

I'll be back in a bit, I have to run out and get some venting for Lisa's brand new washer and dryer. Man, if we keep having to replace stuff like this, and get dental work done, I don't know when I'll be able to get the camera gear I want. :)

I heard that Jim, we just replaced our washer and dryer two months ago and now the tv just went out. I'd rather spend some money on photography equipment, my wife won't let me.:rolleyes::p

I'm very happy with it, but it doesn't get used very often because I'm into a different type of photography.

Jim PCPhoto is not impressive, it is the only one I am familiar with out of the possibilities you listed.

Hi All

Looking forward to seeing more on this discussion of lighting, something that holds interest for me in the future.

A question for you fine folks, and I know it has been covered before. My niece Molli, is doing a fund raiser to help finance her way on to a trip on a tall ship later this year and is selling magazine subscriptions. I thought I might get one or two from her. What do you guys like of the choices I have.

This one is pretty good IMHO

Two questions...I guess when Puds gets back...where did the log come from in the desert? And, how does Puddles Skywalker float in the air in the last frame??

I actually had someone who worked for me who thought the sun revolved around the earth...scary.

When I was a kid, High School aged, I met a friend of my mom's who belonged to the Flat Earth Society. At first, I thought it was a gag, so I started laughing out loud.

That didn't go over very well.

Anyone here ever carry two bodies with lenses attached to shoot? How do you maneuver them?

Lisa did all day yesterday for the wedding.

hey can you guys share some opinions with me. I am looking at these two different kits and I really know nothing about lighting. I don't need anything extravigant.

I have a bunch of lighting equipment in the other room. Lisa knows a lot about it. To me, it's like some form of the Dark Arts.

This is the route that the PermaPuddles and I went as well.

You can get the flashes off of eBay pretty cheap ~$50. PermaPuddle went with the elinchrom triggers (as recommended, by Curtis, I believe). I went with the Pocket Wizards.

Elinchroms work well. Lot less expensive than the PW's.

For those of you that have two camera bodies that you carry around on your shoulders, I've heard good things about This Product. (external link)

Of all of these, Outdoor Photographer is the only one I subscribe to. I used to subscribe to Popular Photography before their content became reptitous and they became a shill for Sony and Nikon. I once attended a seminar co-sponsored by them and Sony that promised a DVD of the entire two-day program. I never received it, even after repeated e-mails and a couple of phone calls. I've had a less than favorable opinion of either outfit since.

I do have a small collection of Popular Photography from 1940-41 that are real interesting to read, especially since it seems I read the same articles in the magazine in the 1980's...

American Photo is one I hate. It is not American, but owned, like many publications, by a giant French company. It has a French editorial staff and in my opinion seems to push a liberal political view more than feature substantive photographic subjects. I always look at it at the news stand but don't buy it anymore. They often feature a photographer and talk very little about the images or technique but give the photographer a platform to talk about their views or philosophy which I have found is almost always an anti U.S., anti war, anti current administration view. That is fine if thats what you want to read but not what I want in a photo magazine. It is also a very thin magazine.

PC photo is another I look at but don't buy. They seem to feature more computer and software stuff than interest me. They also seem to feature the newest and latest stuff and publish the manufacturers opinion on it. They don't seem like a unbiased photo mag but more of a platform for new products as presented by the company that makes them.

I don't think I know Photo Life.

Outdoor Photographer, Popular Photography and Imaging, and Shutterbug I buy and enjoy.

I get OP, Pop Photo, PC Photo and Digital Photo Pro (all but Pop. by the same company). DPP has more on actual shooting pros than any of the others and fewer features on how to get artsy shots of bubble gum in the rain.
