Just bought a used 20D from a dealer. It looks brand new and I suspect that it may have been a demo unit. I have heard that there is a hidden menu with a shutter operation counter. Does anyone know about this?

Only for the 1D bodies, not the 20D.

Can't you take a pic and see what number it is on? Unless they screwed with it..

You can see the image number, but you can also reset that count to zero any time you want to.

And it can be set too much higher numbers as well. The image count is not a good indicator for cameras that have not been in your possession since the day it came out of the box. There are too many things that can change it and too many hands on camera increasing the odds that the image count is not close. Also, if the shutter has been actuated without a CF card in the slot, the pic number is bumper.

The only way to get an accurate count is to send it to Canon and they can tell you. If the cameras is still in the warranty period, you can send it in for a cleaning which the seem to do once for free and ask them at that time for the actuation count.

But if the camera is operating great and has no other flaws, what does it really matter? Have fun with it.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

Thanks everyone. Not worried about it just interested. Went out with it yesterday and got the first results. I know it is obsolete now in terms of pixel count but the pictures are stunning.

Congrats. It's a discontinued model but certainly not obselete. CMOS sensor with DIGIC II processing, ETTL II FEC, 1/8000sec shutter. When it was released in 2004??? it was the 'bees knees'. A successor to the 10D and a primary tool for many wedding and event photographers worldwide.

It's a great camera and when used with the right techniques and equipment, will blow the snot out of many recent released Nikon prosumer bodies.

Pfft, I have printed shots a couple of feet across from my wimpy 8mp 20D and had them turn out fantastic! 8->10mp isn't all that much in reality.
