Digiscoping ( a way of attaining extreme focal length by using a birding scope attached to the camera by way of an adapter ) has got me interested. Has anyone out there tried this. What sort of results have you had? Can you recommend any particular combination of adapter and scope?

You should be able to get good results with your G9. I had a G1, now use an S5 but I keep my old A95 just for use with my Bushnell 20x spotting scope.

Looked at the adapters (all quite expensive) out there but in the end just got a regular 52mmm aluminum adapter (similar to those at Lensmate) on Ebay for the A95 and then made my own custom adapter to fit it to the scope using PVC pipe fittings - saved a whole bunch of money and it works just fine.

Hi Larry,

I've done this with my G7 (same lens as your G9) with good results, however, it has taken quite a bit of experimentation. It has been fun though.

My first setup was this:

The Kowa had too much chromatic aberration and vignetting with the 20-60x zoom Kowa eyepiece so I replaced the zoom with a Nikon 50mm f/1.4 prime lens which worked pretty well. I didn't like the limited zoom range so I bought a small APO refractor telescope which is here:

As you can see if you poke around on Picasaweb or flickr, I haven't done much bird photography with it. It's all mostly of the moon.

Ambrose

Canon 30D with 17-85mm IS lens, Kalimar 500mm f/8 mirror lens, Canon G7, Canon 430EX, NIkon 50mm f1.4 with adapter, Manfrotto tripod and head, etc.
