Go Mac. Apple is overpriced when your on a tight budget. ;) I feel you get what you pay for. I bought a Mac Book Pro. When you order it online, you have the opportunity to purchase the Adobe Creative suite (PS, AI, Adobe Pro, Dreanweaver, In Design, Bridge and i cant remember what else) for an extra 400 bucks. You cant beat that.

Dell over apple everytime. apple are overpriced for what they are, now theyre intel based theyre essentially same difference as any other laptop. youre paying for the name.

and Dell laptops are the worst

sorry but that is a big pile of BS. we run approx 100 Latitudes here and the only time we call Dell is down to insurance claims. im currently on a D820 (UK model) centrino duo and i cannot fault it.

personally id go with your univercity suggestion, if it turns out you need to do something that the mac cant do then youre shafted.

It's too bad that people who say get a Dell over a Mac, have never owned a Mac.
I was a Dell owner/user for years and years. Some of them were great, others plain sucked. If you have a problem with the Dell, plan on spending half your life on the phone with tech support. Apple tech support is far superior.

I bought two MacBook Pros, and they are the best computers I've ever owned. Easiest to use, absolutely no problems.

Last night, in fact, I purchased the new Mac Pro Tower with a 23 inch Cinema display, got the educational discount right at the store by pushing for it. $200 off the tower, $100 off the display.
I currently have no less than THREE Dell towers sitting unused in my basement. And one is only a year old, their top of the line XPS stuffed with a raid array and everything else it can have.

As an anecdote, the first Mac I got was for my daughter two years ago. The 15 inch G4. She loves it and still works perfectly, in spite of her abuse of it.

My son refused to go Mac. I got him a Dell tower. Then he wanted a notebook instead of the tower. AFter good grades in college, I took that tower back (sitting unused) and got him the Dell XPS notebook, 17 inch screen, etc. After one year, he was begging for a Mac. I got him one that was for sale on this forum, a brand new, sealed box 17 inch MacBook Pro for $1799. It was and is amazing. He loves it.

Mac's operating system is just superior with less problems. Just look at their new towers. They can accept gobs of ram, and use it, etc, etc.

Go Mac, you won't look back.

(Note to stockbroker: Buy more Apple stock. ;) )

As you may have noticed you won't get a consensus on which is better. People either love Macs or they hate them. After years of editing video on Mac based systems I learned to hate them....ironically many non-linear systems have gone PC based...

I don't hate Macs anymore..maybe because I am not forced to use them or I just feel more comfortable with a PC....

no ive never owned a mac but we support 20+ in our design dept.. and tbh theyre not all that. a decent PC could do exactly the same job.

half the design dept wouldnt mind working on PC (itd be easier working with them on windows network) but its the mac favouring head of dept that stamps his foot and stops it happening.

itd be a darn site cheaper too.

If, and you should, go Dell, you don't seem to be build the best laptop possible. I was playing with selections and I got some good combinations for less or around your price. Maybe it's me, but I'd rather carry a 13" or 14" laptop around all the time than a 15". I have a 14" and I had a 15" and there's a difference.

As for RAM, you can buy it and even pay for installation at Circuit City or Best Buy for less than what Dell or Mac or any company for that matter will charge you. You can buy 2 2gb sticks and install for I think between $200 - $300. Pending sales, prices, idk. For me to get to 1GB and install was $130. So I'm just estimating based on that.

I've never installed RAM on a laptop so idk if it's hard. Would just seem so.

on dells there tends to be 2 slots. the first is on the underside of the laptop and is accessable by 1 screw.

the second is under the keyboard. generally (at leas on the latitudes) you just pop the button and LED panel off by prising with a flat screwdriver then unscre 2/3 screws that retain the keyboard.

hth :)

Whatever, I've never been impressed with ones I've had or had to use. If I had to buy a PC laptop it definitely would not be a Dell. I'd consider a Sony or Lenovo.

Heh, sounds just like the IT dept at my last job--none of them knew how to support Macs, so they just bashed them.

To the OP, this will inevitably turn into a Mac vs. PC debate, as all of these threads do. Honestly you really just need to look at the big picture. I use a Mac, and as a result I don't even pay any attention to what goes on in the PC world, it really has very little effect on my life, because I would never buy one. Unfortunately, I have to use PC's at work--all that this seems to do is make me appreciate my Macs more. :)

Chances are, if you buy a Mac, you will tend to buy Mac software and if you have plans to go back to a PC or use both, it will just wind up costing you more money. But if you're committed to using a Mac long term, then you may as well start making the investment now. The good news is that you can run Windows on your Mac if you have to.

Good luck!

Mac killed my inner child....

I have that riff on my hard drive and still get a belly laugh every time I watch it!

IMHO, get teh Mac and run XP on it if you need to run some XP based software.
