Looking for some decent reviews or shots forom this lens, anyone own one? Looking to get it as a replacement travel lens for the 24-105, often I find 105mm not long enough (street portraits and such).

Cheers.

It was just tested/reviewed by Popular Photography magazine. You can read it online here (external link).

Wow, that was a very favorable review. I'm a bit surprised actually.

I just got this lens yesterday. Deciding between this, Tamron 18-250mm, Sigma 18-200 OS, and Canon 70-300 IS USM.

I decided to take a chance on this new Tamron and the VC. All I have done was a few indoor, low-light shots (ISO 800-1600) last night. I attached two shots from my experiments last night, one a 28mm and one at 300mm. Please realize these were purposely shot in low-light, at IS01600. Also, the exported jpgs from Lightroom you are seeing are at 50% quality setting. the VC was on for both of these shots. I was especially impressed at 300mm how the VC worked (I believe I was at max f/6.3 for this shot). And in the viewfinder (I have a Canon XTi), once the VC locks in 1 sec after the shutter is halfway pressed, all shake (at least noticeable in the viewfinder) ceases. Quite amazing.

Once I get some outdoor time this weekend, hopefully I can post some additional photos in better light, and lower ISOs. My intention for this lens will be my general purpose walkaround/travel/vacation lens, not necessarily indoors (I have a 50mm-f/1.4 prime for that :)). But I wanted to push the limits a little just to see...

I will say I am initially very impressed, especially the VC (Vibration Compensation) is amazing. I was taking incredibly steady shots across my room at 300mm. Also, the size is great, I think I will be much happier with this for travel vs., the Canon 70-300mm IS, even if I have to give up a little quality (and that's from only one review I read).

PS Images were shot RAW on Canon XTi, imported into Lightroom, with no other changes besides the exported jpg size & resolution reduction. Hence why white balance is off....

Any chance of telling us at which speed these were taken?

Of course, forgot in the original post.

the 28mm was shot at 1/50s, f/4.5, and the 300mm at 1/15, f/6.3. I was in Av mode, set for each focal length to the widest aperture supported, and let the XTi set shutter speed.
