I initially thought this lens was 'crappy' when I compared the shot I took with it and my Canon A630's output. There was no difference or so I thought. I almost sold this lens until I read Photozone's review and saw the len's MTF chart. At 18, 24, 35mm, I set the aperture to f5.6, at 55mm f8 (but even at f5.6, it's sharp enough). I also learned how to meter manually using the Zone System. Lastly, I only use this lens outdoors before the sun sets. Here's a photo taken with the kit 18-55 f3.5-5.6.
Shutter speed: 1/180
Aperture: 5.6
Focal length: 55mm
ISO: 200
Metering mode: Spot
White balance: Auto
Picture Style: Standard
It wasn't the lens that was crappy, it was me.
It's good at close-ups too.
Shutter speed: 1/8 (I love the IS on this thing)
Aperture: 5.6
Focal length: 55mm
IS0: 1600
Metering mode: Spot
White balance: Auto
Picture Style: Standard

I'm glad I didn't sell it.
