thxs and good catch. I'm local and need to go back and really take my time and get some good pics. That was done without a tripod and I was rushed cause i was with family.

At 18mm. My new monitor makes the 19" look tiny!

Reduced in size, sharpened. To avoid sharpening artifacts on the blurry fine lines of the distant tree top near the center of the frame, I used a selection when sharpening, leaving that tree top out of it. If I had sharpened the tree top, depth would have been negatively affected also, resulting in a more "flat" image. I might select a larger aperture next time.

Below is a 100% crop from the original unmodified JPEG.

Now if only I could decide what prime lenses to get, without going bankrupt.... which ever I end up buying, they will replace this lens that came with my camera and does not impress me much in terms of sharpness and fine detail. It's also got a relatively narrow max aperture, which is not a great match to the IMO weak performance of the 450D at ISO >400. It's hard to get a nice shallow DoF when you need it, and often hard to get enough light in, because the max aperture drops from 3.5 pretty quickly as you start to zoom in from 18mm. This 18-55 IS got me started in photography recently and it's done its job allowing me to learn with reasonable versatility. Had it been a fast lens, I wouldn't have learnt what makes a fast lens preferable or necessary in what situation.

@Chris, LOVE the dog shot, others seem to be just snapshots.

@Graben, I love this photo, but it feels like the crop is a bit too tight on the log.
