I've done my best to search for this info (here and elsewhere) but I didn't find all the info, so I'll post what I've found and my questions, and some kind soul can point me to a previous thread if I've missed it.

With lens adapters for EOS cameras (specifically I'm getting a Nikon-EOS first) are there brands or features that make one clearly superior to others?

From reading different threads, I've gathered that there are some differences:

THICKNESS
Too thick: it won't focus at infinity
Just right: well...it's just right :) (precision machining usually costs more)
Too think: it will focus at infinity but the lens markings might not match true focus distances and DOFs

MATERIALS
aluminum: cheap, soft?, easy to damage?
bronze: anything advertised as "bronze" on ebay is probably not
others?

CHIPPED OR NO CHIP
adapters with chips will allow for the AF light to be used. Some people have found this useful and others not so much. Is it worth the cost, or better to get a "dumb" adapter for each lens?
Some sellers advertise that their chips are "glued better" than their competition. Has anyone ever had any problems?
Also there is always the possibility that a chip could negatively affect the camera's electronics. Is this really a possibility?

OTHER
any other characteristics that I missed?

In the end, are there really significant differences among the various adaptors, especially those found on eBay? Anybody have some that they have used and really recommend?

Thanks

Hama has adapters for Canon EOS: http://www.hama.de/index.hsp (external link)
Also here is a great article about mounting manual lenses with EOS: http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-manual-lenses/ (external link)
Anyways, I ordered an adapter to my father for his old FD lenses that will focus at infinity. http://www.hama.de …chMode*1/bySearch*eos+fd+ (external link)
I think Hama has all kind of adapters for the EOS. :D

Yes, Thanks. I mined it for what I could. I didn't find too many specifics on the differences between different brands/sellers/manufacturers.

Most of the auctions (are there ones in online stores?) seem to be rather identical. Should I just by the cheapest thinking that it will work the same as the more expensive? (i.e. cheapest chipped or cheapest non-chipped.)

thansk

Fair enough.
All I can offer is my own experience with one specific eBay vendor. The product I received was advertised as plated brass and from its mass, it certainly isn't aluminium. It was shipped promptly, arrived well packaged, and works exactly as described. The only qualm I had was that while the total price was reasonable, I thought ($US50 shipped), the actual division between product and shipping had been fudged (shipping charged was $US10, but actual postage was more like $US2), basically to cheat eBay.
Apparently that ruse is not uncommon.

It looks like he has what you are after (external link) for $50 shipped.

thanks xarqi, he's on vacation starting tomorrow, so I'll probably see if I can find something similar in the next ten days.

one of mine from Big_IS wouldn't lock on to my lenses, so the vender sent me a new one, asking only that I send the defecto back...let me keep the back lens cap to defray the postage....
on another, the screws holding the two halves together came loose and lost...replaced by a local, no problem...just keep aware of them...
on my 135mm lens the point of focus is when the LED goes OUT as I turn the barrel towards infinity...oh well, at least it's consistent.

I have 2 BIG_IS adapters: M42 and Nikon.
The Nikon seems fine.
The M42 (older version) is too thin, I can focus "beyond" infinity and it throws the distance scale off. No Aperture flange, which gets annoying sometimes.
They were very cheaply made, even though BIG_IS has newer models, I don't think I am going to buy his stuff again.
I also have a ericcc1006 C/Y adapter which is just fine. He is also very responsive seller. I wish he made an M42 with an aperture flange though, maybe he does now.
All of the above are made of aluminum and have an AF confirm chip.

Thanks all for posting their experiences.

And thanks gasrocks for that link. I hadn't seen that list--very helpful.

Anyone else want to weigh in with recommendations of adapters to get (or avoid)?
