Cloud isn't the first thing that springs to mind.. it's an interesting background anyway, though!

Very nice, Lotto.
Please provide the following info:
1)Distance from light to cookie
2)Size of cookie
3)Distance from cookie to backdrop

I think it's very effective. It does look starish without the model, but overall I think you may have achieved what you were going for.

Thanks. The cookie cutout is aobut 20x20". Distance to the strobe is 2 ft, and 5 ft to the bg in my setup shot. I've played with different distances, closer to the bg, more defined or focused the pattern.

It's easy to use with a strobe, the modeling light tells me where to place the cookie. As with other color bg lighting, the trick is spill control.

Lotto, I'm confused. Did you say that the blue was placed over the AB800 strobe, with the cutout board between the white reflector panel and the strobe? What I don't understand is how you got most of the reflector panel to be blue when the cutout board only lets light through the cut outs. And how come the cutout board itself is pinkish instead of blue?

BTW, that's a neat setup. You're one of the most creative guys I've met in this forum. :)

Leo, yes there is a blue gel on the AB. Let me try to explain this way: I started with smaller holes on the board, when the exposure was adjusted, I got blue spots on the BG. But the "dead spots" on the white BG turned grey. So I enlarged the holes, overexposed the high light parts a bit to make them white, the fall-off would turn the space inbetween blue/light grey.

The carboard is brown color, I guess the blue gel turns it to pinkish looking.

And thank you for your kind words on creativity part, I hope my photography skill can catch up with my hand skill :)

Thanks for the explanation, Lotto. It's perfectly clear now.

Re my "creative" comment, I was referring to both your handcrafting skills and your photography skills. :)

Great stuff, Lotto. I'm going to do some experimenting with a small flash unit and a similar setup.

Still waiting for those cute daughter shots.

As shot, the 'cloud' seems a bit too well defined. It might have benefitted by moving the subject farther away from the backdrop, to throw the projected image a bit more out of focus.

Another option might be to diffuse the BG light so that the shapes are less pronounced when projected on to the backdrop.
