I kinda like it, but will you explain your thinking on the angles?

partly to be as close to the subject as possible so less people walk into the shot

partly (sometimes) to crop out annoying people or details in the background

and partly because i like to do it that way

Photography Composition 101:

"Setting your subject matter on a diagonal will almost always make for a more dynamic picture. Even if this is an invisible diagonal that draws your eye between two points. Move around the subject and look for a diagonal."

Along with the "rule of thirds" this is probably one of the first things you will read or hear when starting in photography.

I understand all of that and have for some time. But often diagonal shots don't work and many better photographers avoid them
His response about getting closer to the subject makes far more sense to me

I agree about the diagonal not always working...but I would dare say MOST of your better photographers will stick to fundamentals...unless there is a very good reason to not do so. What makes them good is knowing when.

First the photos, are really good quality, the exposure is great, the colors are awesome, etc.

However, the "diagonals" are not adding to many of these photos, but in fact are distracting in some.

Often many newbies take insanely tilted photos that add nothing to the image....other than making one's head hurt. As for Jakes shots....this is not the case. The diagonals on 1 and 4 are fine, but the rest seem to be tilted for the simple fact that he was using a 35/1.4 lens (I'm not sure if that's the lens he was using....so don't quote me on that ;) ) and therefore wanted closer shots, but didn't have the width.

Many times, specially in this age of digital photography, we take photos so quickly without thinking about the the subject; the emotion we want to convey, etc....and that's when one begins to add "diagonals" to emphasize the subject appropriately.

Jakes, Your photos are great, don't take this personally. I'm very envious of your shots ;). However, shack, saying diagonals will make a picture always more dynamic is to simplified.

If you cared to notice....I qouted someone else's words direct from a basic composition article...which was my point. There are several "rules of thumb" which are currently taught and have been taught for much longer than digital photography has existed.

I also stated in a later post that diagonals aren't always the answer.

I do like some of the angled shots and some don't work as well.

Im a newbie to this kind of photography but I really like the tilted angles, I think the non-tilted angles would look a little less dramatic and normal, but thats my opinion well done on composition and colours :D

They're all pretty good. The only thing that annoys me is the blown out lights in the bokeh of the last one. :(

yes 35/1.4

i would have prefered another colour bike than white so it was more distinct against the lights, maybe if i bought one they would have moved them around for me :)
