I reformatted a drive of mine without realizing it had a bunch of pictures on it. Is there any way to recover these files? I have not written anything else to the drive since the reformat and I did a basic reformat, not a multiple pass reformat.

What can I do?!?!

There are several software packages that can recover data even from a formated drive such as this one Linky-link (external link). Some work better than others and none guarantee to recover everything. I have used the recover my files product as a family member did the same as you and it did a pretty decent job.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

No, I didn't yet! I tired two programs, both with failure. (R-studio: the computer blue-screened, and disk keeper (http://www.undelete.com/file-recovery.asp (external link)). It scanned the drive and couldn't find anything.)

Try Photorec http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec (external link). I had success with it when my CF card was corrupted.

I've had good results in the past (admittedly, several years ago now) with Active File Recovery - http://www.file-recovery.net/ (external link)

It even comes with a trial version that basically allows you to see what it should be able to recover (actual recovery is limited to files smaller than 64K without paying).

Can I pull pictures from a CF card after they have been deleted? There were something like 200 shots on the card. then it was deleted. then 10 shots were put back on the card after deleting the others. that's the state it's in now.

You can try zero assumption recovery. I have used it many times on drives/cards.

Mike,

Google "fdisk /mbr" I've used this before with some luck.
Good unerase software should have found your images as they usually
work off the file headers.

As long as the pictures weren't written over, then you should be able to get them back.

http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download (external link) as mentioned above is pretty good. A bit slow, but should pick up all files that weren't written over.

ive used "GetDataBack for NTFS" before with good success. my friend had accidentally ghost an image on his 250gb HD that had like 200gbs of data on it and I was able to recover it. Though it took a couple days to do so lol

I have also used Active File Recovery, and would recommend.
2 Levels of search.
It finds file trees - so if you remember the folder name - You can recover just this.
I got a free update/upgrade when i needed to re-download it too!
