I have recently added the EP-EX15 Eyepiece Extender to my 30D and I really like using it. I wear glasses and also have a rather prominent nose. The EP-EX15 makes it easier use my viewfinder and keeps the LCD clean from facial oil. Despite being able to adjust the diopter of the viewfinder, I have never been totally comfortable viewing through it before I attached the EP-EX15.

However, my wife who doesn't wear glasses and who has a cute little nose (one of the many reasons I married her) doesn't like the Extender a bit and claims that she cannot see into the viewfinder at all with it attached.

This is a "different strokes for different folks" situation. If you have any trouble with your Canon DSLR viewfinder (as far as I know - this unit fits all the Canon DSLR cameras) it might be worth trying one of these Extenders.

However, I would buy one from a retailer where I can try it on my camera. You might be like my wife and hate the thing.

I love mine, and for the same reasons you cite.

My studio partner hates it and won't shoot my camera with it on.

I also use them on all my cameras. To solve this problem, you might do as I did, and buy your wife her own camera. Also, they get lost very easily. To solve this, I put a small dab of silicone, (available at any auto parts store, non hardening variety,) on the edges of the extender and the grooves it slides into, and have not lost one since.

Please speak slowly and distinctly. I have a wife and a computer, I don't need any more confusion in my life.

I have always had one and love how it gets your eye and nose further from the camera, but hate how small it makes the viewfinder. I tried gutting it too but then of course you cant see all the view finder at any given time. You have to look around to see it all. I wish Canon would just make all the eye pieces naturally stick out like the 1D series.

Ben,
I've been thinking about getting one. Which way do you like it ?smaller viewfinder?or gutted and looking around to see everything?

I have used one. I like the way the stick out. I now stop using it because it does make the view finder significantly smaller. Canon claim 15% smaller, I think it is true.

I would guess it is not as much of a problem for 5D but for 1.6x body, the viewfinder is kind of small to start with, making it smaller makes it very painful to use.

Also, I notices it introduce some barrel distortion in viewfiner.

I used one for a few months. Mostly because my wife did not like how close she was to the camera. I kept it on while we were sharing a camera, but did not like it at all. I was always snagging it and it made the viewfinder way to small. Just my to cents.

Gutted on the 5D or Xti its hard to see the whole viewfinder. Hard, not impossible. Its still very usable. But I think even having an EX15 gutted and not gutted I am still going to opt to just use the normal eyepiece and either put a cover of the LCD to not scratch the screen from all the wiping of the nose grease or just live with it the way it is.

Sorry to revive on old thread, but I just bought a used Camera with a EX15 on it. My wife was like "wow, I can finally see comfortably into the viewfinder". I was like "Wow, the viewfinder sure looks tiny and I can't get situated like I want!" So this is totally true. She loves it and I hate it. Typical marriage kinda stuff, right? Was going to sell the Rebel but maybe I will have to keep it around just for her and leave the EX15 on it. :)

I hated the EX-15 until I removed the lens elements, now it's great

It's not that much different to the normal view, you get use to it.

The extender works out great for me and my glasses. Now if they made contacts lenses for tri-focal users, then I would not use the extander.

I use the extender on both of cameras, and love it!
I don't wear glasses, but as the OP I have a rather "prominent" nose, and don't like the oils left on the LCD.

I did, however, "gut" both of my extenders (removing the 'lenses' inside the extender), because I found BEFORE gutting them, the viewfinder was TINY. Gutting them makes them worth it, in my opinion.

NOTE: By "gutting" them, I mean performing this simple mod; https://photography-on-the.net …309&highlight=EP-EX15+Mod

i used the ep-ex15 with my last camera, but threw it in when i sold the camera.

now, i use the hoodeye eye cup. it works great, except it blocks the sensor for the lcd. now my lcd doesn't automatically turn off. i may have to see if a gutted extender will move the eye cup far enough from the sensor to work.
