So I've just noticed that in Manual and TV mode my G3 will allow me a shutter speed no faster than 1/250 of a second. I can spin the dial to get a faster speed but when the camera focuses it sets the speed back down to 1/250. This has not happened before. This is especially annoying when using the 420EX as I have to compensate for the flash by increasing the shutter speed. I overexposed a number of pictures this evening b/c of this. Shutter speeds below 1/250th operate as normal. Is there something I'm missing here? I'm thinking it may be a glitch that has developed in the firmware for some dumb reason. I can't see anything mechanically wrong or in the menu that would cause this. Any ideas before I contact Canon? Assuming it is the firmware how would I go about reloading it? Thanks for the help!

I could be wrong but I believe Canon deliberately sets the max shutter speed to 1/250 whenever flash is used.

No glitch

Yep, the maximum flash synchro shutter speed is 1/250. For more information, see page 177 of G3 Manual, "Using an Externally Mounted Flash".

Thankyou. I figured that out last night about 10 minutes after posting. (Isn't that how it always goes ? ) TV mode worked as per usual w/ no flash. TV mode also worked per usual with the 420EX when the flash was set to high speed synch. All's well. Thanks!

My school's digital rebel that I use has a max flash sync of 1/200.. ugh. It sucks. I wonder why it's better on the G3?

Try using the high speed sync switch on the flash (the 380EX has one at least).
